Luke Combs‘ cover of “Fast Car” has reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs Chart dated September 30.
The remake of Tracy Chapman‘s 1988 classic climbed to the top after waiting for 19 weeks at No. 2.
“It has been so cool to see everyone enjoying this song over the past few months, whether it was people who were hearing the song for the first time or people [for whom] it brought back memories of Tracy’s timeless recording,” the country star told Billboard.
“I’m just glad this song got another life because it deserves to be around forever; it will always be one of my favorites,” he added. “I’m glad we got to park Tracy’s song at the top of the Hot Country Songs chart, where it should be.”
Combs frequently covered “Fast Car” during live concerts but only released it as part of his album, Gettin’ Old, in March.
The song earned 76.6 million in all-format radio airplay audience and 16.7 million official streams and sold 4,000 in the United States in the charting week ending September 21, according to Luminate.
“Fast Car” marks Combs’ sixth song to top the Hot Country Songs chart.
