Mamma Mia star Meryl Streep confirms she has been separated from husband for ‘more than six years’

Meryl Streep has confirmed in a statement that she separated from her husband Don Gummer more than six years ago.

The 74 year old actress – who has starred in movies such as Mamma Mia!, The Devil Wears Prada and Death Becomes Her – married sculptor Don, 76, in 1978.

The former couple share four children; musician son Henry, 43, and actress daughters Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32.

Meryl confirmed the sad news via her representative in a statement to Page Six in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The statement reads: "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Meryl and Don had not been photographed together since they attended the Oscars in 2018, where Meryl was nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Post as Katharine Graham.

However, she was seen wearing her wedding ring at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 on Friday – just hours before the shock announcement of their split.

The pair met in 1978 after being introduced by her brother, Henry, following the death of Meryl's late boyfriend John Cazale who had passed away from lung cancer at the age of 42 earlier that year.

They had mainly kept their relationship out of the public eye, but Meryl gave an insight into their union when she was asked by Vogue magazine in 2002 what the secret to a long marriage.

She said at the time: "Goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while.

"There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life."

Meryl once again made a rare comment about her husband when she picked up the Oscar for Best Actress in 2012 after portraying Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

She said in the emotional speech: "First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play him out with music.

“I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives you’ve given me.”

Meryl has most recently been seen on screens in the third season of Disney+'s comedy mystery Only Murders in the Building.

She joined the Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short in the cast as failed actress Loretta, who is finally given her big break when she is cast in a Broadway musical that is soon plagued by the death of its star Ben Glenroy, played by Paul Rudd.
