‘I was rooting for him!’ MasterChef UK fans ‘gutted’ as Jack is eliminated during nail-biting semi-final – as the 2023 finalists are REVEALED

MasterChef UK fans were left ‘gutted’ on Friday night as contestant Jack Wilkinson was eliminated in the nail-biting semi-finals.

The journalist had joined his fellow contestants as they battled it out for a place in the final, with the aspiring chefs tasked with creating a ‘theatrical and fantastical’ dish that ‘pushes the boundaries’.

With the competition extremely strong, judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace opted to send Jack home after he disappointed with his sweet bone marrow and bread dish.  

Jack’s elimination at the final, hurdle means that Terri, Chariya, Anurag and Omar are the 2023 finalists and will face each other once more in a bid to become this year’s MasterChef champion.

After the result was announced, fans rushed to Twitter to share their reactions to Jack’s exit, with one remarking they were ‘rooting for him’ while others agreed it was the right decision.

‘Oh no! So disappointed that Jack didn’t make it to the final four but these have to be the most likeable bunch ever. I wouldn’t mind any of them winning’ commented one viewer.

While another shared: ‘Right decision – Jack fell just a little short of the other four in this round. He’s a hell of a cook, still.’

‘Oh no, Jack was my favourite, so sorry to see him leave’ tweeted a third upset watcher,

‘Waah, Jack Right choice, but I’m so sorry to see him go. He can cook dinner for me anytime’ tweeted a fourth.

Another person simply put: ‘gutted’ after hearing the sad result. 

With another adding: ‘No surprise that Jack left, he didn’t hit the brief. Such a shame to see him go though, I was rooting for him.’

The semi-finalists certainly showcased their creativity during the episode, with Jack creating a bone marrow and bread dish consisting of crème brûlée and a chocolate crumb served with carbonated fruits.

However, his dish fell short as the judges felt that his crème brûlée hadn’t cooked properly and was on the verge of curdling while they didn’t understand the addition of the fruits to the meal.

Jack faced very stiff competition on the night, with the likes of Chariya creating a stunning take on a Japanese cherry blossom tree complete with candy floss, while Omar took things up a gear with his quirky witches cauldron dish which was accompanied by his very own spell.

Following the reveal that they were finalists, the top four shared their experiences of being on the show and their joy of being in the final ahead of their last challenge.

Anurag, a 41-year-old accountant originally from India shared: ‘I decided to enter MasterChef to express my passion for food and to learn from others. For me food is more than just ingredients, recipes or dishes, it’s an expression of who I am and demonstrates my creativity.’

He added: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to make it through to the Finals! I see MasterChef as the perfect platform to express my love for cooking and what could be better than getting the opportunity to cook for the British Consul General in Turkey?!’

Master Coffee Roaster Chariya, 40, originally from Thailand shared: ‘I love watching MasterChef and decided to enter the competition so I could showcase Northern Thai cuisine. I was initially nervous to cook for John and Gregg, but they were so supportive and they made me want to be the best! 

‘I’m absolutely delighted to reach The Finals, especially given the incredibly high standard of the other cooks, but I’ve been determined to stay focused and do my best.’

Omar, a 31-year-old toy developer who lives in Barnsley said of his experience: ‘I’ve loved MasterChef for so many years and always secretly harboured a dream to enter and I finally felt brave enough to apply. 

‘Going on MasterChef is all about the experience, the pressure, and the opportunity to learn from some absolute industry pioneers and it has delivered on every one of those beyond my wildest dreams. I have never felt nerves like I do when cooking for John and Gregg!

‘I have such admiration for both of them and for the legacy they have built with the show, so to be able to part of that – even if it had been just for 15 minutes (which luckily it wasn’t) – was an honour I won’t ever take for granted.’

Meanwhile, Assistant Management Accountant Terri, 30, originally from Northern Ireland said: ‘Cooking for John and Gregg is terrifying but amazing all at the same time. They have the best job in the world! They are really supportive, funny and, most of all, honest. In the kitchen I’m a perfectionist, so I was probably harder on myself than the judges ever were.’

She added: ‘Finding out I’m through to the Finals feels like I’m having an out of body experience! I’m not sure it will ever sink in that I’m a MasterChef Finalist. Being a fan of the show, I remember all of the Finalists through the years and to think that I have joined that list of amazing cooks is unreal.’
