Matt Baker was lucky to have met wife before telly lark kicked off

Gabby Roslin insists Matt Baker’s wife Nicola ‘took her watch’

Matt Baker said he was grateful he had met his wife years before he became a household name.

The Countryfile presenter married his childhood sweetheart Nicola Baker, nee Mooney when he was performing in the disco show at Pier 39 in Cleethorpes back in the 90s.

The couple tied the knot in 2004 after dating for seven years.

Speaking to the Express in 2011, Matt said he felt “lucky” that he met his wife before becoming well known in the TV industry.

“I’m so lucky that I met my wife Nicola before any of this telly lark started,” he said. “I knew way back then she was the one and I don’t think I could have done all this without her.”

The couple have two children together – son, Luke, and daughter, Molly.

The family reside in the Chiterns but they did relocate to Matt’s family farm in the Durham Dales during lockdown last year after his mum was knocked over by sheep and broke her leg.

The 45-year-old documented their heartwarming journey in his Channel 4 show Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales.

Meanwhile, Matt has been on his travels again, leaving behind his beloved farm in the Durham Dales to explore the USA in a new series that he described as an “absolute dream” to film.

The Channel 4 show sees the County Durham star embark on yet more adventures as he discovers rural life in another part of the world.

“I filed three passports when I was at Blue Peter. I’ve had a lot of amazing experiences throughout my career and there’s not many things I haven’t done really,” Matt told The Mirror.

Speaking about his new US-based series, Matt said: “This series has been an absolute dream for me. I grew up on a sheep farm in the Durham Dales and whenever I go on holiday, I always find myself in the rural parts, chatting to local farmers and those who work the land.”

He added: “I met the kind of people you don’t normally see on television – the quiet ones working the land and doing the best for the environment. As soon as they realised I was very much into their world, they were so open and honest with me. I never feel happier than when I’m with like-minded folk in the rural community.”
