Matt Lucas on stressful Saturday Kitchen appearance as show didnt get memo

Matt Lucas admitted he felt stressed on BBC show Saturday Kitchen as producers didn’t “get the memo” about the food he disliked.

Speaking on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast, the actor admitted he was a fussy eater as a child and that there were still certain foods he remained hesitant about.

When asked if it was stressful for him to be cooked for by others during his time with Jessie, Matt, 49, recalled an awkward experience on Saturday Kitchen.

He said: “It was stressful once I went on one of those [shows], it might be called Saturday Kitchen. And they made…”

Jessie’s podcast co-host and mum Lennie Ware chimed in to ask: “They didn’t make you eat snails or something?”

He continued: “No, it was, because I don’t eat cheese, and I don’t eat fish, but they didn’t get that memo. So they made me some. They gave me some haddock.”

Due to the show being live, Matt said he felt he had no choice but to be “well-behaved” and eat the fish cooked by a “very good chef”.

“They gave me the haddock and do you know what I did? I did have a taste of it because obviously, I was on the television. You need to be polite.”

In a bid to get out of the awkward situation however, the former Little Britain star admitted he did his best to try and “palm off” the dish to fellow guests.

He added: “I went, ‘Oh, this is… try this! Oh, try that!’ And I went round the studio. And then people would have gone Matt Lucas is very good to the crew, you know.”

“It was very nice for haddock, but I don’t like haddock,” he continued.

Matt has been a guest on the show with both former host James Martin and current host Matt Tebbutt.

James fronted the programme up until 2016, before making his move to ITV for show Saturday Morning.

Also on the podcast, Matt revealed he didn’t like cheese, which sometimes stopped him from trying things as a host on the Great British Bake Off.

Speaking on Vice’s End of the World Dinner Party, the comedian revealed: “I really, really, really don’t like it.

“I have an intolerance to it – it makes me sick. I don’t like the taste or the smell. I can’t eat it – it makes me feel very ill.”

The actor left the show after three series this year, citing a heavy workload as his reason.

At the time, he said in a statement: “I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops [Noel Fielding], Paul [Hollywood], Dame Prue [Leith], the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.

“I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can’t wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!”

This Morning’s Alison Hammond has since stepped into his shoes as Noel’s new co-host.
