Matthew McConaughey says he and Woody Harrelson might be brothers

Agent Elvis: Official Netflix trailer with Matthew McConaughey

It is well-known that actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson share a sweet “bromance” spanning over 20 years since the pair first worked together on EDtv. But now it appears their “bromance” could be taking on a more literal term as McConaughey revealed in an interview that he and Woody Harrelson could actually be brothers.

The interesting revelation came when Oscar-award winner McConaughey opened up about his sweet friendship with his True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast.

McConaughey discussed the possibility of his mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, knowing Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, on the show.

The actor began discussing the special bond he and Harrelson share, explaining: “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been a murky line and that’s part of the bromance right?”

McConaughey then began sharing his suspicions surrounding the fact his mother had a sexual encounter with Harrelson’s hitman father after she made a cryptic remark about knowing the late convict.

He recalled: “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families.

“And my mum is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad’ … Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

After his mother’s comment, McConaughey admitted he began to do the “math”.

“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant, and did some math and found out that [Woody’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce.”

The Academy Award winner revealed there may also be possible receipts and places where there “might have been a gathering or a meeting or a ‘knew’ moment.”

McConaughey admitted that the pair are “on the precipice” of doing DNA tests to verify their suspicions.

However, he remained more reluctant than Harrelson in case he discovered that his father might not be his biological parent “after 53 years of believing that.”

“Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him,” McConaughey asked.

The Interstellar star continued: “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that? I got a little more skin in the game.”

While the true relationship between the pair remains a mystery, McConaughey also noted how his friendship with Harrelson has brought their families close together.

McConaughey said: “My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew etc etc. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me.

“His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him,” he revealed as he spoke highly of his family’s relationship with Harrleson’s family.

The pair are iconically set to star in a comedy series called Brother From Another Mother on Apple TV+.

The series is “based on truth,” McConaughey revealed as he explained how the series will explore the bond between the two actors and their families.

Emmy Award winner David West Read created the “heartfelt odd couple love story” based around the “strange and beautiful bond” between McConaughey and Harrelson, the Apple TV+ press release said.

“Matthew and Woody’s friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas,” it added.

The comedy doesn’t yet have a release date, but fans will be able to stream Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s untitled series on AppleTV+.
