Meghan Markle denies lying to Oprah Winfrey about growing up as an only child

Meghan Markle claimed in her bombshell Oprah interview that she "grew up as an only child". She also said: "I wished I had siblings, I would have loved to have had siblings." Now Meghan's half sister Samantha is suing the Duchess for $75,000 after calling these claims "humiliating".

But the Duchess of Sussex's lawyers argue that her account was not meant to be "objective fact" rather a subjective statement of her own feelings. Meghan's lawyers are defending the case of defamation case which has been brought about by her half sister Samantha Markle.

Meghan's lawyers say that her description of growing up as an only child cannot be false because it is a "textbook example of a subjective statement of how a person feels about their childhood."

The Duchess' US legal team have filed to dismiss the case in legal papers submitted to a Florida court.

Samantha, on the other hand, claims that the bombshell interview subjected her to "humiliation, shame and hatred on a worldwide scale." She also says that Meghan told "false and malicious lies" about her "rags to royalty" story at the expense of her paternal family.

Papers submitted by Meghan's lawyers say: "Plaintiff [Samantha] first asserts that she can disprove that Meghan "grew up as an only child". But this perception is entirely unfalsifiable. It is hard to imagine a more personal and subjective feeling than how one views their own childhood. Moreover, Plaintiff's opposition completely ignores the context of the statement where Ms Winfrey asked Meghan about her relationship with Plaintiff. Meghan's response was obviously not meant to be a statement of fact that she had no genetic siblings or half-siblings. Rather it was a textbook example of a subjective statement about how a person feels about her childhood."

During the landmark interview, Meghan dismissed the claims made in Samantha Markle's book The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister. She told Oprah: "I think it would be very hard to tell all when you don't know me." She also said they were "not close" adding: "She changed her last name back to Markle, she was in her early 50s at that time, only when I started dating Harry so I think that says enough."
