The moments before a phone that was key evidence in the Wagatha Christie trial was 'dropped in the North Sea' have been caught on camera.
The iPhone 12 Pro, which belonged to Rebekah Vardy ’s manager, Caroline Watt, allegedly ended up falling in the water during a family boat trip.
Coleen Rooney’s legal team argued that it allegedly contained WhatsApp messages between Jamie Vardy’s wife and Caroline that could’ve been used as vital evidence in their High Court Libel case.
Now, the high-profile case in which Rebekah tried to sue Coleen for publicly accusing her of selling personal stories to The Sun has been thrust back into the spotlight after being featured in a new Disney TV series.
Caroline Watt’s husband, Steve Watt, has spoken out on what he says happened to the phone, saying he 'wants to set the record straight.'
The football manager provided The Sun newspaper with pictures and videos of the Scottish sightseeing venture which shows Caroline sitting next to him holding the mobile phone as they took their children on the boat trip.
Claiming that the choppy sea had caused Caroline to lose the device, former footballer Steve claimed, "This wasn’t a luxury yacht in Dubai; this was a drizzly day in Aberdeenshire. The sea was choppy, and Caroline dropped the phone purely by accident."
The football manager even alleged that the sea was so rough that Caroline and their daughter became 'seasick' during the trip.
He said that Rebekah’s manager had been 'leaning on the railings overlooking the water' to try and stop feeling ill.
Steve added that the couple’s children then spotted a seal, which prompted Caroline to take out her phone to take a video.
The football star said that the captain 'cut the engines' to try not to scare off the seal, but when he started up the engine again, there was a sudden 'judder and jolt'.
He claims this led to Caroline stumbling on the railing, with the phone then flying into the sea.
"She just turned round and said, ‘F***, I’ve dropped my phone.’ That was the first thing that came out of her mouth, ‘F***,'” said Steve.
Caroline’s husband said that his wife suffers from osteoporosis, and this can make her hand 'seize up' in cold weather.
The whereabouts of the phone became a matter of ridicule during the court case, as Coleen’s barrister said potentially crucial messages were "lying at the bottom of the sea in Davy Jones’ locker."
Rebekah had replied, 'Who is Davy Jones?' which caused members of the courtroom to laugh. Mrs Justice Steyn explained that she meant 'the bottom of the sea'.
Rebekah lost her legal battle after a court ruled Coleen's claims were 'substantially true'
The ordeal surrounding the phone and 'lost messages' has now been explored on Vardy V Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, Channel 4 show 'Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama,' and now Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story on Disney.
