Paul Mescal fans become even more obsessed after star’s interview in Irish goes viral

Irish actor Paul Mescal had fans in a spin after speaking Irish on the BAFTA's red carpet.

The Normal People star, 27, who has reportedly called time on his romance with musician Phoebe Bridgers, was nominated for Leading Actor at the 76th edition of the awards for his portrayal of single father Calum in independent film, Aftersun.

Before the ceremony, he spoke to an interviewer for Irish language channel TG4, where he commended the amount of Irish talent being recognised at this year's BAFTAs.

Paul also joked that his Irish used to be much better in school, where he attended a Gaelscoil – an Irish language medium school – before eventually ending the interview in English as he joked: "I'm gonna give up on that now. I did my best!"

Fans were quick to comment on his 'sexy' language skills.

"He makes Irish sound sexy! He's that talented," one wrote, with a heart-eyes emoji.

Another wrote: "Paul Mescal speaks Irish ??? and I thought he couldn't get sexier."

Another joked: "Paul Mescal speaking Irish at the BAFTAs has brought me to my knees."

One commenter even joked about the collective experience of learning Irish at school, writing: "When the Irish Oral is just ticking along and the examiner is trying to help you get the pass!!"

Despite being nominated for leading actor, Paul eventually lost out to Austin Butler, 31, for his method role as Elvis Presley in the lauded biopic by director Baz Luhrmann.

Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy and fellow Irish actors Colin Farrell and Dylan McCormack were also nominated.

Paul's leading actor nod was one of four nominations for the indie film Aftersun, which triumphed in the outstanding British debut category, where Scottish director and writer Charlotte Wells thanked her mother, joking: "This is for you – literally, as I overpacked."

Irish talent prevailed at this year's ceremony, particularly thanks to hit film The Banshees of Inisherin.

The film stormed the show, with director Martin McDonagh receiving accolades for best director, best original screenplay and outstanding British film, and supporting actor and actress Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon triumphing too.

Martin made reference to the fact that despite being an Irish film, it was up for the British accolade due to Film4's investment in the project.

But this isn't the first time there has been uproar, with the BBC earlier this year having to apologise to Paul Mescal himself after being referred to as British in an article.

In a sweet move, Paul attended the ceremony in London with his mother, Dearbhla, and musician sister Nell, 19.

Nell even posted a photo of their mother dressed to the nines in a silk suit to Twitter, captioned: "A Gucci girl".

Fans will have eyes on next month's Oscars, which sees Paul nominated once again for the leading actor award.
