Prince William actor Ed McVey seen filming The Crown in St Andrews – where royal met Kate

Filming for the sixth season of popular Netflix series The Crown is underway, as actor Ed McVey who will play Prince William, has been snapped filming scenes in St Andrews.

The now Prince of Wales attended the the University of St Andrews from 2001 to 2005, where he first enrolled to study Art History before transferring to Geography, from which he graduated with a 2.1.

The new series of the show will feature William’s time at the Scottish University, where met his now wife Kate Middleton, with prior snaps from the Netflix set showing filming of the moment the two first laid eyes on one another.

New photos show Ed, 22, filming more scenes in St Andrews, as he appears the very image of a young Prince William.

The actor was seen dressed in jeans, a white shirt with a burgundy jumper and blue jacket as he sat in the window of Molly Malones pub before leaving the establishment and crossing the road, while carrying a number of books.

William and Kate became friends during their time at university, and began a relationship after she caught the 19-year-old Prince’s attention when she strode down the catwalk in a sheer dress for a charity fashion show.

The pair graduated in 2005 and briefly split up in 2007, but William went on to propose in November of 2010, with the couple marrying the following year.

They have since had three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Meg Bellamy, 19, has been cast in the role of Kate Middleton for the sixth, and final, season of The Crown, which will see Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West reprise their roles as Diana, Princess of Wales and the then-Prince Charles.

Imelda Staunton will also return to the series as the late Queen Elizabeth II as will Jonathan Pryce, who continue as the late Duke of Edinburgh.

The last season of the show focused on the marriage breakdown of Charles and Diana and the leaked phone calls between Charles and Camilla.

Other photos from set have seen actress Elizabeth Debicki and young Prince William star Rufus Kampa in Canary Wharf, as they filmed a memorable moment in William's youth – when he and Diana visited the homeless.

In an article in the Big Issue last June, William, who is now the patron of homelessness charities Centrepoint and The Passage, recalled visiting shelters as a child, and the impact this had on him.

He wrote: “I was 11 when I first visited a homeless shelter with my mother, who in her own inimitable style was determined to shine a light on an overlooked, misunderstood problem.

"Ever since I came here with my mother, homelessness has stuck with me as an issue I want to fight for. I've done everything I can to raise the profile of the homeless, and I want to do a lot more.

"While I may seem like one of the most unlikely advocates for this cause, I have always believed in using my platform to help tell those stories and to bring attention and action to those who are struggling."
