Prince William and Kate Middleton become roving reporters for Radio 1 takeover

The Prince and Princess of Wales have recorded a special programme for BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat to mark World Mental Health Day.

William and Kate Middleton announced on Monday's Newsbeat show that their discussion on the importance of mental health will be broadcast on Tuesday 11 October.

The pair addressed listeners during the bulletin, with Kate teasing that "Newsbeat will sound slightly different" on Tuesday.

William said they wanted to "have a meaningful conversation about mental health".

He explained: "As part of World Mental Health Day, Catherine and I have recorded a special programme taking over the radio to talk about the importance of mental health."

The prince added that the couple will talk about mental health toolboxes which can provide people with coping skills and resources to alleviate anxiety and depression.

He said: "You could be living one life one minute and something massively changes and you realise you don't necessarily have the tools or the experience to be able to tackle that."

Kate added: "The first step for all of us is to keep having those conversations and keep reaching out for help."

She also told listeners that she would "love to know" how they look after their own mental health.

The couple have interviewed four guests about their mental health experiences, including a young mental health advocate who recently helped writers on EastEnders with an ongoing storyline about schizophrenia.

Another spoke candidly in her interview about how to cope with mental health issues, saying: "There's no right or wrong, that's the thing as well. Different things will work for different people."

The full 15-minute long show featuring the royals' takeover will air across Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network on Tuesday 11 October at 12:45pm.

They will also discuss the stigma around mental health, pressures on young people when it comes to using social media, as well as helping young people with how to open up on their mental health too.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been long-time advocates of mental health awareness, leading the Heads Together initiative with Prince Harry since 2016.

The Heads Together initiative unites eight mental health charities, including Mind and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), with money raised going towards innovative projects and programs to help tackle mental health barriers.

This also includes a £2million fund for digital tools for young people seeking mental health advice and support in schools and the workplace.
