The British musician celebrates his 71st birthday on October 2 and has no plans to get off stage as he is set to perform in France this week. The Police’s hit 1983 song Every Breath You Take was listed by The Richest as the eighth most profitable song of all time and reportedly earned the singer millions on its own.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Desert Rose singer is worth a staggering $550million (£493million).
The outlet reported that Sting has 100 percent of the songwriting credits on the song, although bandmates Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers contributed the drums and guitar pieces.
Because of this, the singer earns a vast majority of the song’s royalties, racking up income when the song is sampled, played on the radio, or even when it’s included in media like a commercial or film.
In 2018, over a decade since the song’s release, Every Breath You Take still reportedly produces an average of $2,000 (£1,790) for the singer every day. Roughly translating to $730,000 (£654,000).
With this staggering income, the song allegedly makes up a quarter of Sting’s lifetime earnings.
The singer has used his millions to create an enviable property portfolio that spans across the world and once reportedly held a lucrative New York City penthouse.
In 2008, Sting and his second wife Trudie Styler bought the penthouse for $26.98million (£24.2million) and sold it in 2017 for $50million (£44million), although this was $6million (£5.3million) lower than it was originally listed for on the market.
Earlier this year, the Northumberland-born musician sold his back catalogue of hits to Universal Music Publishing Group for $300million (£221million) according to The Guardian.
The catalogue included songs from his time with The Police as well as music from his solo career.
The outlet noted the celebrity wanted his music to have “a home where it is valued and respected” and claimed it was a natural move “to unite everything in one trusted home”.
Additionally, the musician wanted to reconnect “new audiences, musicians and generations” to his full body of musical works.
Despite his undeniably lucrative career, the singer did not originally plan to go into music, and actually studied to become a teacher before he skyrocketed to stardom.
Born Gordon Summer, the musician first worked in an array of industries including as a tax officer, construction worker and bus driver.
He then went to college to pursue his studies to become a teacher and started dabbling in jazz at this time.
The Roxanne singer was part of a few local bands, namely Newcastle Big Band, Phoenix Jazzmen and Last Exit.
A striped yellow and black top became his signature look, and his friends started jokingly calling him Sting and the moniker stuck.
In 1977, at the age of 26, Sting moved to London, and alongside friends Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani, formed The Police.
During the time, daily brawls were breaking out on the streets of London as the punk and alternative scenes clashed with authority.
The group reportedly felt that titling themselves The Police would provide free marketing for the band due to the consistent police presence in London, according to Stewart Copeland’s website.
The Police’s first single, Outlandos d’Amour, charted in the top 10 in the UK and they steadily grew to stardom and won six Grammys on their way.
Then, in 1984, as personalities clashed and their community goals began to dissipate the band broke up. The move shocked fans as The Police were at the height of their fame.
Summers told The Mirror in 2015: “The camaraderie we had was being pulled apart and it was getting harder to strip away all the c**p and just be three guys.”
Sting forged a successful solo career and also delved into the film industry, earning an Academy Award nomination in 2000 for his song in The Emperor’s New Groove.
Most recently he also contributed a song featuring Rey Chen, What Could Have Been, to Netflix’s game-based series Arcane in 2021.
