Richard Madeley’s GMB drama as he broadcast while daughter had emergency C-section

Richard Madeley has told of the dramatic moment he found out his daughter Chloe was being rushed into theatre for an emergency c-section.

The Good Morning Britain presenter was live on air when he received the news from her husband James Haskell, 37, on the family’s group WhatsApp, which he opened during a commercial break.

Speaking exclusively to OK!, Richard said: “She was born about 8.30am – I was on air – I was on GMB, and I really wanted to tell people but I obviously couldn't because it was too soon, and we had to make sure everything was alright and all of the rest of it.

“I was getting texts and emails from both her and James all the way through the programme – every time we hit a commercial break, I was opening them and something else would happen.

"I was telling my co-presenter Charlotte Hawkins, privately, ‘it’s all kicking off, she’s being induced, oh my god she’s having an emergency c-section’ – but obviously I didn’t say anything on air.”

While Richard was understandably apprehensive, the 66-year-old said he didn’t panic as his wife Judy’s children – including Chloe, 35, – had all been born by C-section. The couple are also devoted parents to Chloe’s brother Jack, who has son Kit, four. And Judy shares twins Dan and Tom with her first husband David, and two granddaughters from Tom, who are nine and four.

He said: “Judy has had all of hers by c section and all of mine by c section so I’m familiar with it. I understand that this particular surgeon is reputed to be just about the best in the country at performing caesareans, so I wasn’t unduly bothered.

“Of course I was concerned – you know when you hear the words emergency C-section, all that really means is that you didn’t elect to have one before you went into hospital, it doesn’t mean, ‘Oh my god, the blue lights are flashing’, although obviously they had to get her out quickly.

“So she was born in the last section of the programme, and I couldn’t get to my phone, and we went off air and I went straight to my phone and switched it on and there was a picture of her. There she was. Everyone gathered around and applauded, the whole crew. It was really nice.

Then we came home and waited for things to settle, and for Chloe to be stitched up, and we went in at about 2pm – six hours after she was born.

Bhodi arrived at 8.36am on 10 August, weighing 7lb 9oz and with “long legs like her dad’s” after a difficult eight-hour induced labour ended in a C-section. Chloe had planned on having a natural water birth with gas and air but when Bodhi stayed put 24 hours after her waters had broken, she was told she needed to be induced due to the risk of infection.

Chloe’s parents were the first people to meet the beautiful bundle and arrived at the hospital “fit to burst”.
