Reactions are flooding in following the news that Boris Johnson is set to quit as Prime Minister, with Stephen Fry and Richard Osman among those leading the way with wisecracks while celebrating the news.
Following a steady stream of resignations from cabinet ministers and senior figures in government, including Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid, it’s been reported that today, following days of resistance, Mr Johnson will tender his resignation.
The BBC’s political editor Chris Mason said that the PM has finally agreed to step down, while No 10 has not confirmed the reports but has announced that he will address the nation today.
Off the back of the latest update, there’s been a flurry of activity on social media as people across the UK react to the prospect of Mr Johnson leaving his position, with it being expected that a new Conservative leader will be chosen over the summer.
Having expressed incredulity earlier today that Mr Johnson was ‘STILL Prime Minister’, actor and comedian Mr Fry tweeted: ‘He’s going! Bless my soul,’ before adding: ‘But NOT YET …’
Former Pointless host Mr Osman speculated on how his resignation announcement could go down, writing: ‘I imagine his resignation speech will be sober and classy.’
Activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu celebrated Mr Johnson’s impending exit excitedly, tweeting: ‘YASSSSS! BORIS JOHNSON IS OUT! FINALLY!’
While sharing the ‘confirmed’ news of Mr Johnson resigning, Piers Morgan tweeted that the PM reportedly ‘wants to stay on until October until. new leader is announced’, remarking: ‘This seems preposterous – surely he has to go now?’
Meanwhile, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker referenced his own sci-fi show by writing: ‘Got a horrible inkling that any moment now Johnson’s going to reload a previous save and we’ll have to do the past six weeks again.’
A No 10 source has claimed Mr Johnson spoke to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee, to inform him of his decision to resign.
‘The Prime Minister has spoken to Graham Brady and agreed to stand down in time for a new leader to be in place by the conference,’ they said.
