Ricky Champ’s EastEnders co-star sends thoughtful handmade gifts to newborn

It has only been five weeks since actor Ricky Champ and his wife Sammy welcomed their second child, River, into the world. But as the couple adjust to life as a family of four they tell us they have been inundated with support from the EastEnders family.

Ricky, 42, who plays Stuart Highway in the soap, revealed that Danny Dyer in particular has been spoiling the newborn.

“We’ve had some lovely gifts – flowers and cards and a lovely gift bag full of baby clothes from the Dyers," the actor told OK!

Roger Griffiths, who plays Mitch Baker in the soap, also gave the couple a more sentimental gift. “He made us this metal letter ‘R’, which sits in River’s room now.”

And its not just co-stars that have been spoiling the new baby, the couple’s daughter Beatrix has also been doting on her baby brother.

“She’s been an amazing big sister, just as I knew she would be," gushed Sammy. "She helps me with everything and always wants to give him kisses and hold him. If he cries, she’s the first one there to stroke his head and hold his hand."

The pair were worried about Bea adapting after being the centre of their world for five years, yet Ricky assures that “she’s been wonderful.”

"I think maybe there’s an awareness that she doesn’t have all of the attention now," he said. "But she’s been so involved. She’s even been changing nappies. There’s a mothering instinct that’s already there and she really embraces it.”

Sammy, 34, has a passion for interior design and spent ages designing the nursery for her son. The walls were replastered and then Sammy chose to paint the ceiling a terracotta colour with white walls.

“I follow lots of accounts on Instagram for inspiration and always use Pinterest to create mood boards. I like calm spaces with lots of rattan, plants and neutral accents, so that’s what I tried to do with River’s room. We will be in there a lot feeding him, so I wanted it to be calming and peaceful,” Sammy said.

The couple have been married since 2016 and now feel like their family is complete. When asked if there would be anymore children Sammy revealed that “that’s it now.”

"It does feel complete here in the Champ household – so complete that it’s almost overcrowded," she revealed. "At the moment, there are no plans to [have more children] and I don’t see that changing in the future, but you never know.”
