Rihanna Returns With Lift Me Up From Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Soundtrack

Rihanna made her much-awaited return to music on Friday, October 28, with “Lift Me Up,” a song from the soundtrack of the upcoming Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“Lift me up/Hold me down/Keep me close/Safe and sound,” Rihanna sings in the chorus.

“Lift Me Up” was written as a tribute to the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died from cancer in 2020 at 43. Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler all have writing credits on the track.

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them,” Tems said in a press release. “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

Meanwhile, the Barbadian singer hasn’t released an album since her most recent album Anti dropped six years ago. The project, which spent two weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart, featured three Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits.
