Katharine, The Duchess of Kent, has revealed her fondness for rap music, with Eminem and Ice Cube among her favourite artists in the genre.
In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the 89 year old said she has an open mind when it comes to music.
“I’ll listen to anything,” she told the paper.
“I just love music. Something that catches my ear on the radio – I don’t really listen to records.
“If it makes my feet tap then I’m happy.”
Although the duchess admitted she does not “know all (the) names” of rappers, she has a fondness for the Lose Yourself singer as well as the former N.W.A member.
“I even like beatboxing,” the duchess added.
The royals often opt to remain private and rarely decide to give interviews; however, Katharine decided to stay out of the limelight 20 years ago in order to pursue a 13-year-long career as a music teacher and was more than happy to share her love of great music.
Katharine first hinted at her eclectic music tastes in a 2005 BBC Radio 3 interview, during which she cited rap music and the singer-songwriter Dido as her favourites.
Then in 2014, she described rap as “wonderful”, “terrifically difficult” and “beautiful”, and admitted being a big fan of the British artist Tinie Tempah.
She also gave piano lessons in a rented studio flat near her official residence at Kensington Palace. She served as the president of the Royal Northern College of Music, and was the director of National Foundation for Youth Music from 1999 to 2007, the Guardian reports.
Despite her decision to stay away from public life, Katharine continued to appear at major events, including the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011.
The decision came soon after she had gained attention for her conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1994 – she was the first member of the royal family to convert publicly since the passing of the Act of Settlement in 1701.
She reportedly watched the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations on television with “fascination”.
She continued: "I think she’s an astonishing leader of people. She’s just a shining example to us all. And she goes on. It’s incredible. She’s nearly 100.”
The Duchess is a descendant of Oliver Cromwell and she married Prince Edward the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1961. The pair have three children together George Windsor – Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Taylor and Lord Nicholas Windsor.
