Russell Brand has been accused of rape, sexual assault and controlling and emotionally abusive behaviour. The comedian denies the allegations.
Over the weekend, Channel 4, The Times and The Sunday Times aired their investigation, Russell Brand: In Plain Sight, which details that four women have come forward with allegations about the comedian’s behaviour between 2006 and 2013.
One of his most controversial moments was in 2008 when he made a prank call during an onstage gig in Northampton to an emergency rape line set up by the police.
Brand pretended that he had spotted a man wanted for sexual attacks in the local area.
During the time, there had been three sexual assaults in underpasses in Northampton within a few weeks.
During the phone call, Russell said: “I have got some information for you. I’ve seen a gentleman who fits the description.
“He was wearing a lime green top and polka-dot trousers, and I thought, ‘Well, look at the state of him’.”
He continued: “I’ve had someone come near my underpass.
“He was dressed absolutely atrociously, he looked like Timmy Mallett.”
He also told the police operator that the sounds of laughter were coming from an episode of The Bill on television. Brand also said that his name was Sarah.
Brand’s actions caused public uproar at the time. Lynda Yorke, of Leicester Rape Crisis, said: “I don’t think that’s particularly amusing. It’s in very poor taste.”
On Saturday, September 16, a Dispatches special was aired on Channel 4 detailing the accusations against Brand.
Four women alleged that they were sexually assaulted by him during the peak of his fame between 2006 and 2013.
Before the show was broadcast, Russell posted a video on his X account denying the claims and said all his relationships were consensual.
The BBC has stated that they were “urgently looking into the issues raised.” Channel 4 has also launched an investigation.
