S Clubs tear-jerking tribute to Paul Cattermole as they open Good Times tour

S Club says Paul would have been ‘annoyed’ if they cancelled the tour

The emotion S Club felt for the late Paul Cattermole was clear to see as the group left the stage to mark a tender tribute to him during the debut show of their reunion tour on Thursday night in Manchester.

As the stage emptied, a video montage displayed the late singer in the midst of performing his favourite song, The Good Times – and the nostalgic crowd was silenced.

Jon Lee, Rachel Stevens, Jo O’Meara, Tina Barrett and Bradley McIntosh rushed back afterwards to declare love for their “brother”, who had an underlying heart condition which contributed to his death.

In a quavering voice, 42-year-old Bradley exclaimed: “Wow that’s our brother right there man. Gone but you will never be forgotten. We miss you every single day.”

41-year-old Jon yelled: “Manchester, let me hear you raise the roof one last time for Paul!”, ahead of cheers of appreciation from the audience.

He continued, as reported by MailOnline: “Thank you so much. It’s very special for us this evening obviously. We dedicate this performance to Paul and The British Heart Foundation.”

Last month, the band’s involvement with the charity’s Spotlight On campaign was announced, with Jon lamenting: “As a band we all personally know the devastating effect heart and circulatory diseases can have on people’s lives.”

Meanwhile, back on stage, Jo was equally emotional, chiming in: “All the messages and love and support that you’ve all showed of us and Paul’s family – we are so grateful to every single one of you.

“I would just love to see every single one of you in here right now to show us your hearts for our Paul!”

Referring to one of their much-loved tracks, Tina added: “Tonight is a celebration, so let’s Bring It On Back for Paul!”

Tina also introduced new track These Are The Days, which was created as a tribute to the late singer’s memory.

“For 20 years now people have been asking me: when are you guys going to release new music? So we thought this year, let’s do it,” she reasoned.

Bradley added: “And we did. We dedicated this song to Paul and all of the memories we shared.”

Paul had quit S Club 7 back in 2002 and had begun to enjoy a quieter life as a psychic who performed tarot card readings from his home in historic riverside town Wareham in Dorset.

Although he appeared to have shunned the showbiz life he enjoyed as a younger man, he had been expected to join the S Club reunion tour and fans and band members alike were devastated to learn of his death in April 2023

The news came just two months after he and the others had announced they were going back on the road to mark their 25th anniversary – and former girlfriend Hannah Spearritt subsequently pulled out of the tour, revealing she was “in bits”.

She told The Sun: “Will I ever perform with them again? I just don’t know.”
