Love Island favourite Shaughna Phillips has opened up about her upcoming motherhood, just days after officially revealing the news that she is expecting her first child on Instagram.
The 28 year old reality star announced her exciting news exclusively with OK! magazine, revealing the moment she found out, her baby names so far – and why she won't be revealing the father's identity.
And in an exclusive video interview, the TV star has opened up on her upcoming motherhood journey – and why she won't be finding out the sex.
Speaking exclusively to OK! , the mum-to-be revealed it’s been a closely guarded secret for a few months now, after she originally discovered she was pregnant back in August.
“I found out I was pregnant on August the 4th,” explained Shaughna. “I had just come back from Mallorca after going there for the Love Island final and I was on my own at home with two dogs and I literally did not know what to do.”
After processing the information for herself, Shaughna sought comfort from her loved ones, as she revealed the first person to hear her happy news was someone she hadn’t originally anticipated telling first.
“So the first person I told I was pregnant, which was very strange because we never really speak to each other, was my brother!” the star recalled. “He was the only person that was in the house, and I screamed up the stairs ‘Callum, Callum!’ "
“And he came up the stairs thinking oh my god, has something happened or is there a burglar or something, and I just literally said to him, I’m pregnant! I have a baby in my belly!”
“And he was like ‘Okay…’ Then we kind of just stared at each other.”
A short twenty minutes later, Shaughna was finally able to share the news with two of her closest Love island pals, including Paige Turley and Demi Jones
“I told Paige about twenty minutes after I found out,” recalled Shaughna. “I was literally ringing around my phone book, like ‘oh my god, I’m pregnant!’”
“Paige actually refers to the baby as Baby Turley, so we’re going to have to let the baby’s dad know, that it’s gonna be a Turley.”
Once the initial shock had worn off, Shaughna fully embraced her impending motherhood as she looked towards the future and what she could expect further down the line – including whether she would be having a little girl or a little boy.
Unlike other parents who have decided to throw gender reveal parties, Shaughna admitted for her pregnancy, she wanted the sex of the baby to be a surprise.
“I am not going to find out the sex of the baby, just purely for logistical reasons. I am at home, living with my mum at the moment and I have no room for anything.”
“ I just know, I will go nuts if I find out the sex. I will buy everything in pink or blue!” laughed the former Islander.
Reflecting on what it means to be a parent, Shaughna admitted that she had always intended to be a mother, but had never been sold on the timing to have them.
“I don’t know if it’s just me, but I always pictured kids in my future. I always thought I was going to have kids, but I did start worrying when am I going to want them? I didn’t want them,” she revealed.
“And then one of my managers, who is a really close friend, told me she was pregnant and I got a little bit jealous! And I was thinking, I kind of want that feeling as well.”
Since discovering she was pregnant, Shaughna has been eager to hear as much advice and stories of first hand experience from those around her, although she did confess there is one area where she draws the line.
With a cheeky smile, she told OK!: “I love getting as much advice and tips as I can from friends and family – but I do draw the line at birth stories.
“I don’t want to hear – ignorance is bliss! I’m going in and whatever happens, happens. But other than that, give me all the advice I can get!”
This may well be a wise decision for Shaughna, as she also went on to reveal that she and her partner had already discussed the potential for having a big family with a few more additions further down the line.
Recalling a recent conversation, she said: “So me and my partner have already talked about having a big family, and he says ‘I want four kids!’”
“And I’m like, first of all relax, I’m still being sick with the first one! But I think, ask me after I’ve given birth! Give me about a month and I’ll let you know how big I want the family.”
Touching on her health during her pregnancy, Shaughna experienced a number of side effects in her first few months including sickness, but also an unexpected number of cravings.
“I have definitely had cravings so far,” she admitted.
“I was eating everything for the first twelve weeks. It’s kind of plateaued a bit now, and I can kind of give and take food, but for the first few weeks I’m surprised I didn’t turn into a jacket potato because I was eating so many.
“Now it’s fruit though. I go through maybe three or four tangerines a day.”
Looking further ahead to the future and her actual delivery, Shaughna candidly explained that she hasn’t quite thought about that part of the entire pregnancy experience just yet.
She said: “I haven’t really thought about the birth at all yet. I know that I can’t watch One Born Every Minute because that is traumatising, and actually I’m surprised. I thought pre-pregnancy that the second I found out I was pregnant, that was all that would consume me.
“But I found it such a blessing, just being pregnant that I feel like that’s kind of the goal, to get to that point and ultimately just be kind of relieved when I get there!”
