‘The Little Mermaid’ Director Reveals Why Harry Styles Turned Down Prince Eric

It’s been nearly four years since it was revealed that Harry Styles turned down the role of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid

Now, with just less than two months before the live action reimagining hits theaters, director Rob Marshall has revealed the 29-year-old superstar’s reasoning for declining an offer.

Get more details inside…

Rob reveals that they did meet with Harry for the role, but of course, he ended up declining, as it was previously revealed in 2019 ahead of the start of filming.

The “As It Was” singer “really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker,” Rob told EW.

Since then, Harry has gone on to star in My Policeman and Don’t Worry Darling, and even filmed a cameo in Marvel’s Eternals.

Other actors who showed interest or auditioned for Prince Eric include Cameron Cuffe, who did a screen test for the role, as well as 13 Reasons Why‘s Christian Navarro, who sent in an audition tape, and was eventually very vocal about the eventual casting of Jonah Hauer-King. Gavin Leatherwood also potentially auditioned for the role as well!

Of the audition process, Jonah recalled Halle Bailey‘s warmth and kindness.

“I didn’t take her being kind to me as any indication,” he said. “I just assumed she was a lovely person and would’ve done that for anyone.”

He also remembered her going to his trailer after their screen test and wishing him luck and hoped to see him again.

“I thought, ‘What does it all mean? Is that an indication? Did she knock on everyone’s door?’” Jonah said. It was noted that Halle actually did not do that to everyone…
