Tom Grennan ‘caught in legal row as he faces plagiarism accusations over one of his hit songs which he can no longer perform live’

Tom Grennan has reportedly been caught in a legal row after being accused of stealing someone else’s song.

According to The Sun, the singer, 27, is being sued by someone who claims he plagiarised the lyrics to his 2016 song Something In The Water.

A source said: ‘Tom has been going through hell behind the scenes after someone claimed they wrote Something In The Water.

‘It is his first track and means so much to Tom, so to have someone saying this is really painful for him.

‘He can no longer perform the song live and is having to try and fight it off.’

Tom alluded to the dispute during a recent episode of his podcast Phone In where he discussed his early music career.

The Lionheart hitmaker told how he would memorise his lyrics rather than writing them down because of his dyslexia.

He said: I never used to write lyrics down, I used to remember them. But there was no proof that I wrote the songs.

‘There was this one thing that happened to me that I showed a guy this song before I was signed and that, and when it came out, he said that he had written the song.

‘There’s this thing where I can’t access anything of that song, it’s one of my biggest songs as well.

Tom added: ‘I can’t say what song it is, it’s an ongoing thing. There’s videos of me doing it at uni but everybody’s got new phones now, everybody’s thrown phones out, so there’s no proof. Done me.’

‘I’m still waiting for someone to be like, “Ah, I’ve found one!” but nobody has, unfortunately.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives of Tom Grennan for comment.

Tom isn’t letting the claims slow him down as he is gearing up for the release of his new album What Ifs & Maybes in June.

Speaking about the record, he told MailOnline: ‘The new album is different because it’s the best body of work that I have ever put out, my songs are better, my pen has got better. I try to always level up with how I write songs and put songs together.

‘It’s got a completely different feel to what Evering Road was. That was a love story, that went bad.

‘This one is about spontaneity, it’s about putting yourself in places where you might feel uncomfortable and to feel comfortable in them surroundings instead.

‘Every day I am living in this world where it’s quite uncomfortable and it’s not normal but I like that because it helps me grow.

‘I just want people to listen to this album and have the belief in themselves that they can do whatever they want to do and be whoever they want to be, a door way for people to be like, “Life’s alright and I’m the owner of my own destiny.”

‘I want everyone to have a party and to smile and not be crying over things, especially when they listen to songs, I want my songs to feel joyful.’
