The ’13 Reasons Why’ actress reintroduced herself and officially came out as a trans woman in July last year after privately embracing her gender identity for a year.
AceShowbiz –Tommy Dorfman is set to walk down the aisle soon. The “13 Reasons Why” actress confirmed that she has gotten engaged to her girlfriend one year after coming out as a transgender.
The 30-year-old actress broke the news in the Monday, August 15 episode of “Broad Ideas” podcast with Rachel Bilson. During the conversation, she revealed that she’s engaged to a woman, whom she did not identify by name. Keeping the details of the relationship to a minimum, Tommy said that her fiancee is a cis woman whom she playfully said is “just a gay girl.”
Tommy got divorced from her ex-husband, Peter Zurkuhlen, in February after five years of marriage. Telling podcast host Rachel, the “Insatiable” actress admitted that after their breakup, she began to feel an attraction to women that she hadn’t felt in several years. “I knew I was interested in women in a way that I hadn’t really been aware of since high school,” she reflected. “I had this unresolved, unexplored thing.”
“I was like, ‘This is the year that I’m gonna go on some dates with girls and feel that out again, and not feel ashamed about it,’ ” Tommy shared. She also declared that she was excited to find “the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with” and said that the romance has been “very affirming.”
Tommy came out as a trans woman last July. In an interview with Time, she revealed that she had “been privately identifying and living as a woman — a trans woman” for a year before coming out publicly.
Tommy also declared that she didn’t wish to change her name. “I’m named after my mom’s brother, who passed a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying,” she explained.
“This is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy,” she further elaborated, before stressing, “It is not transition. Or it is, but not as an idea of going somewhere. Just that I am actually myself.”
