Tony Blackburn breaks silence on quitting BBC show after a decade

Tony Blackburn has decided to step down from his show on BBC Radio London.

Posting on X this afternoon, Tony said: “Just thought I’d let you know that after many happy years on @BBCRadioLondon I have decided to leave the station and this Sunday will be my last Soul On Sunday.

“Over the years we have had a lot of fun with some fantastic live shows for Children in Need and have played some great music.

“I will still be continuing @BBCBerkshire @BBCOxford and @BBCRadioSolent on Sunday afternoon and off course on the great @BBCRadio2.”

The radio broadcaster, 80, has said he decided to leave the station.

Tony concluded: “This is totally my decision and thanks to the many happy years there, but time to move on. Thanks for listening.”

The broadcaster was inundated with messages of support, as one person penned: “Tony you’re Radio London days were brilliant. You definitely know the Soul Scene. Excellent taste. Good luck with your continued work pal.”

Another commented: “That’s sad Tony but at least we still have your company on other shows. You entertain so many people with your brilliant choice of music and your lovely, kind personality.”

A third gushed: “Gutted to read this Tony, one of my BBC Sounds highlights of the week – thanks for the entertainment and the laughs.”
