Tristan Phipps surprised at MIC pal James’ proposal to Maeva: It moved so quickly

Made in Chelsea stars James Taylor and Maeva D’Ascanio stunned fans when they made the shock double announcement that not only had James popped the big question to his French beau, but that the two are also set to welcome a baby.

And it seems as though co-stars Liv Bentley and Tristan Phipps were just as taken aback as the rest of the nation when the husband-and-wife-to-be released the news.

"Some have definitely taken steps earlier than they should have because of pressure from other people," Tristan hints with a smile, referring to his Made in Chelsea pals decision to settle down.

"We weren’t surprised by James and Maeva’s announcements, because we’ve learnt that you never really can be surprised by Maeva as she’s such an interesting character," the 27-year-old added. "But was I surprised by James’ proposal? Yes I was."

The last instalment of the hit E4 reality series saw a very different snapshot of James and Maeva's relationship, with James previously admitting to having kissed another girl behind Maeva's back in what he described as a 'drunken night' at London.

As well as this, the pair's engagement comes after James awkwardly turned down Maeva's proposal on the show, contributing to viewers' confusion when they revealed their proposal and bump news in June.

And James' long-time confidant Tristan was amongst those blown away by the shocking revelation, telling OK! that "everything suddenly moved quite quickly" for James.

"I’ve known James for six years now and when I first met him, he was an absolute animal," Tristan laughs. "He was the last man standing on every night out and was quite the ladies man, and I think everything suddenly moved quite quickly for him after he got together with Maeva.

"From moving out of London, getting engaged and now having a baby, I don’t think it was expected. But saying this, I’m very happy for him."

But with her co-stars expecting later this year, and with gal pals Tiff Watson and bride-to-be Sophie Habboo enjoying 'wife life', Olivia admits that she previously "struggled not to compare" her life to theirs.

"When I first heard that all my friends were getting engaged, it made me feel really sad. I couldn’t help thinking, 'Oh my god, we’re at that age, but I’m not ready'," she explains.

"But now that Tristan and I are back together, we know what our future holds. I’m still young and I’m so happy. Being a young mum doesn’t appeal to me."

"We don’t feel the need to rush into anything," Tristan adds. "The nature of the show means they’re always looking for the next big storyline, so that adds some pressure, but we’ve got our own timeline and we’re going to follow that."
