Camilla to ‘copy’ Queen Elizabeth’s clever fashion choice at Ascot

Former royal butler Grant Harrold, discussed the planning that will go into Queen Camilla’s outfit and the fashion etiquette she will abide by.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Grant said Queen Camilla “will have people advising her over what to wear” for the occasion.

“Obviously outfits are going to be planned months in advance for these different events. I can imagine that they’ll plan the wardrobe she’s going to wear for the whole week.

“Whether it’s brand new or reused, which has become a bit popular with the household now. Even the Queen famously re-wore a few of the same things.

“It’s also possible that we’ll see things that are new that have been specially designed. The King famously always wears the same, which is a grey or midnight blue morning suit,” he noted.

Discussing the late Queen Elizabeth’s Ascot fashion, she was known for wearing bright colours so “it was easier to notice her”.

Grant added: “It was said that they would pick brighter colours for her to wear so she stood out more. I’m willing to bet that this is something that the new Queen might copy.

“The Queen Mother was famous for always wearing hats and people would spot her for wearing hats. It’s possible that Camilla will copy and do something similar with a bright outfit.”

He continued: “I think all eyes will be on Camilla, you know, everyone is talking about her and Charles at the moment. I think there’s a real interest in both of them. Now that we’ve got a new King and Queen, a lot more people appear to be interested.

“We’ve seen them a few times since the Coronation, but we haven’t seen lots of them. I think when Ascot is on there’s going to be a lot of interest and people are going to be wanting to get glimpses of them.

“I can imagine the public will be interested in seeing what they’re wearing, whether they’ve got a bet on and how they will react to winning.

“The Queen was known for jumping up and down, so how will Charles and Camilla do the same? Everyone’s going to be watching to see how they act and behave.

“Princess Anne used to get quite excited as well, and I have seen Camilla get excited when a horse wins a race. It’ll be interesting to see if they carry that on like the Queen,” the former royal employee said.

As for the fashion etiquette at Ascot, Grant explained: “The dress codes for Royal Ascot are really interesting because you’ve got different enclosures.

“The dress codes are quite strict. If you turn up in the wrong dress code, in the wrong area, you won’t be permitted. For example, if you forget to wear a tie you’ll be refused entry.

“It used to be that you couldn’t take your top hats off, but a couple of years ago it was really hot and the gentlemen were allowed to remove their top hats and jackets. They got special permission to do this, which is a big, big thing. It’s very easy to break Royal protocol. For ladies, it will be a day dress with a nice jacket, but fashion obviously changes each year.”
