Do Scots men really not wear anything under their kilts? The truth behind the tradition about real Scots and no underwear | The Sun

MOST people are only left wondering one thing when think about famous Scottish kilts – what do men wear underneath?

If your not Scottish you probably have no idea. So here's the low down the age old tradition.

Do Scots men really not wear anything under their kilts?

Traditionally, men wouldn't wear anything under a kilt – and many still don't.

According to your-kilt.com, the no underwear traditions started with the Scottish Highland Regiments, and found it's way into the wider population.

The website adds: "This is where the terms 'going regimental' or 'going commando' originated."

Many say a "true" Scotsman will never wear underwear under their kilt.

However, there are occasions when other garments are worn beneath a kilt – and it can come down to personal choice.

A good example of when underwear is always worn is during the Highland Games – where the athletes will wear shorts under their kilts.

Scottish and Irish country dancers are also required to wear shorts when competing.

Where did the kilt originate?

The history of the kilt stretches back to at least the end of the 16th century.

The "great kilt" was much larger than the one we see today and would be worn as a cloak draped over the left shoulder, hung down over a belt and gathered up at the front – or brought up over the shoulders or head for protection against weather.

The exact age of this great kilt is unknown.

The smaller, tailored, "walking" kilt was adopted by the Highland regiments of the British Army – passing into civilian usage during the early 19th century and has remaining popular ever since.
