Known for its leftfield, slightly whacky conceptions, American art collective MSCHF has done it again.
Back in February, it broke the internet with its Dora Explorer-esque big red boots. It was also behind Lil Nas X’s controversial ‘Satan Shoes’ constructed from Nike trainers and human blood. Eccentric, much?
Now, it presents: a teeny, tiny crumb-sized handbag.
And yes, it’s really that small. In fact, however minuscule you might estimate it to be, times that by 100 and you’re just about there.
‘Smaller than a grain of sea salt and narrow enough to pass through the eye of a needle, this is a purse so small you’ll need a microscope to see it,’ a statement from the brand reads.
‘There are big handbags, normal handbags, and small handbags, but this is the final word in bag miniaturization.
‘As a once-functional object like a handbag becomes smaller and smaller its object status becomes steadily more abstracted until it is purely a brand signifier.’
Confused? It comes as little surprise that this creation is intended as more of an art piece than a practical accessory.
It’ll initially be displayed – in a sealed, gel case – at the 8 Avenue Matignon gallery in Paris, accompanied by a microscope where the public is invited to view it.
Punters will need to be quick, though – its stint will be relatively brief, lasting from 20 to 24 June.
It’ll then be moved for an auction at Pharrell Williams’s auction house, Joopiter, for the Just Phriends sale. The starting bid is currently unknown, but its collector’s item status is likely to see it acquire a hefty price tag.
Naturally, the internet has responded with a combination of confusion and humour, and the launch has encouraged meme after meme.
‘Finally, a bag that fits all this cash,’ one Instagram user wrote.
‘Bag looks average sized to me,’ another chimed.
Others joked about how it would be received when boarding a flight.
‘Spirit Airlines still be like “you need to check this bag”,’ one humoured.
But the artful intentions behind the bag weren’t totally lost on everyone.
‘Actually incredible,’ said another. ‘I’d love to see how the absolute tiniest details were done.’
With the auction set for the end of the month, we’re yet to see how much this itty-bitty bag will go for.
But if you’re after something a little more practical, it might be best to stick to your trusty Uniqlo fave for now, at least.
