They are proudly displayed by many celebrities these days, but they come with risks and great results are not guaranteed.
How much is a boob job?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average price of a boob job in the US is $4,516 – but that's just for the surgery itself.
It doesn't include other related expenses, which can include the initial consultation, anesthesia, the use of operating room facilities, medical tests, and prescription painkillers.
With all expenses factored in, the total cost can be upwards of $20,000.
In addition, you may need follow-up surgery within 10 years as your breasts and implants change shape.
The price also varies based on the size and type of implants you want.
That bottom line is cost prohibitive for some, though a few women have found creative ways to raise the money, like one who crowdfunded for her boob job.
Celebrities can spend tens of thousands of dollars on breast augmentation.
Pamela Anderson, whom some hold responsible for the big boob craze, has spent around $42,000 on her multiple procedures.
At the other end of the scale, four-time Playboy cover star Carmen Electra spent $12,000 on her breasts.
Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child spent nearer $12,000 on the breasts she said made her happy in 2007.
Victoria Beckham admitted in 2017 that she regretted having a boob job and lying about it.
The Hills star Heidi Montag famously went under the knife for ten procedures, including breast augmentation, in 2010.
Also in the reality star camp, Teen Mom Farrah Abraham had her own breast augmentation in 2010.
Recent photos of Kendall Jenner have sparked rumors that she's had a boob job, though she hasn't confirmed any surgery.
Her sister Khloe Kardashian has been the subject of similar boob job rumors.
Blac Chyna has had four boob jobs as well.
How painful is a boob job?
A boob job is a 60-90 minute operation carried out under general anesthesia, so the procedure is not painful.
You can go home the same day if your surgery is not on the late schedule.
However, a boob job is major surgery, which involves inserting implants in front or behind the muscle in your chest, so the weeks of recovery can be painful.

During recovery, you can’t lift anything heavy or exercise hard for over a month, or drive for the first week, and you will need time off work.
