Cleaning your AirPods is a pretty straightforward process if you follow the steps below.
Remember that AirPods are not waterproof, so you should not use any moisture unless you have to.
- Wipe the surface using a lint-free or microfibre cloth – this removes the dust that settled on the outer surface of your AirPods
- Use a Blu-tack or any gentle adhesive to remove dirt on the speaker mesh by carefully pressing the sticky substance onto the surface and then pulling it away to lift the dirt
- Use a cotton wool swab or q-tip to scrape away any build-up of earwax from the speaker mesh
- To remove any stubborn stains, you can spray alcohol on your cotton wool bud – but just a small amount
Do not use any sharp objects such as toothpicks or needles inside the earbuds as this may damage the sensors and other inner components.
Clean your ears regularly because your earwax will transfer onto your AirPods, particularly the speaker mesh.
Short of constantly changing your AirPods, which would not help the environment, following these tips is the most sustainable way to keep them in pristine condition.

Cleaning your charging case is just as important as the AirPods themselves, and can be more difficult because of its texture and corners.
- Remove the AirPods from the case
- Clean the outer part of the case using a dry lint-free cloth
- If there are persistent stains, you can wet the cloth with a small amount of rubbing alcohol
- Be careful not to spill any liquid inside the charging port or holders
- Let the case dry before you use it
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reach the hinge area and lid
- Use a dry, soft-bristled brush as well to remove dirt from the charging port – this area is sensitive, so make sure you are gentle
