I tried a cheap viral TikTok hack to keep the bugs away while I’m tanning in my yard – it smells phenomenal and works | The Sun

A WOMAN who tried out a cheap viral hack to keep bugs away has revealed that it actually works.

She decided to try out the tip after picking the idea up from TikTok and was stunned to discover that it was actually effective.

For her, it meant a return to tanning once more in her backyard free from pesky bugs.

And there was an added bonus because Jojo (@jojo.butterflylove) said the smell was phenomenal.

Jojo's boundless enthusiasm has seen her attract a huge following of over 226,000 and another whopping 5.8 million likes.

Her TikTok is dedicated to lifestyle-like content, all delivered in a positive and smiley fashion.

It was no different in this post: “Stupid sh*t TikTok taught me today," she said.

But she was going to try it out anyway. "[If] I take Irish Spring Soap, shred it up, and sprinkle around outside where I’m gonna be sitting, it’s gonna keep the bugs away."

Jojo set to work with a cheese grater and a large bar of Irish Spring Soap, creating a mound of green shavings.

“Smells phenomenal," she said. But the timing was also right for distributing her bug-busting substance.

"So since it’s summer and finally hot in Minnesota, not to mention the 4th of July, I’m hoping that’s really gonna work."

She sprinkled it around her backyard and was suitably impressed: “Thanks TikTok," she said in conclusion. "Better than bug spray."

One fan warned of the possible repercussions when it rained: "You [could] get lots of bubbles," they said.

But as far as Jojo was concerned that was no sweat. "Fun," was her response.

Her post has had an extraordinary response, with two million likes, thousands of comments, and tens of thousands of shares.

Commenters backed her assertion that the hack worked.

“I do this and put it in flower beds to keep voles and deer from eating my plants," said this fan.

Another wrote: “We use bars in our camper. In all the nooks and crannies. Never have had any problems with insects and mice. Smells great."

This viewer also used it as a rodent repellent: “I have a summer house in Michigan and we use this on the inside during the summer to keep mice out too. Worked for ten years so far.”

The final comment added another use for this brightly-colored soap: “I learned this from a friend and [they] rubbed it on [their] doorframes and it helped keep [bugs] out of the house too," they said.
