I used to work at Costa endlessly making frothy lattes – now I can rake in £180K a month doing a job anyone can do | The Sun

A WOMAN who quit her job at Costa Coffee to sell make-up on TikTok has claimed she made a staggering £180,000 in one month.

Cariad Ryan, 24, from Wales, has gained around 600,000 followers with her beauty transformation videos, and she’s even bought a house and car with her new income.

Cariad only started making videos in 2020 during lockdown but has achieved “more than she thought was possible”.

Speaking to Fabulous, Cariad said: “At the time, I worked at Costa Coffee where I'd been for six years from the age of 16 to 22.

“It was a 40-hour-a-week job and at the time I really enjoyed it, but I always dreamt of moving into make-up and beauty.

“Though I have no professional background in beauty, make-up has long been a passion and a hobby of mine.

“I started with simple make-up videos, and I quickly found a community on the platform that I really felt a part of.”

Within one year of posting TikTok videos, she’d hit 100,000 followers.

She continued: “At first, it was hard to grow my audience; however, once I hit 100k, my audience started to grow rapidly, and my content received much more engagement.

“My style is very 'full glam' – that's how I like to describe it.

“I think people find my style of makeup different and exciting, which is why so many people decide to watch my videos.”

Cariad started to sell products through the TikTok shop, which is an in-app feature that allows followers to make purchases though videos, whether that be LIVEs or the product showcase tab.

Her selling quickly started to pay off – and she started to see sales in the six figures.

She explained: “I partner with so many brands across the make-up industry and will often use LIVE videos to showcase some of their best products.

“Through these LIVEs, my audience can buy the products that they like, without having to leave the TikTok app.”

By 2021, she was able to quit her job at Costa and work on TikTok full-time, admitting it was “scary” and a “leap of faith.”

Cariad added: “My family were sceptical of a career on TikTok at first, especially because I was leaving a stable job and leaping into the ‘unknown’, but once they realised the opportunities for me to grow through TikTok, they were really supportive.”

She claims her best month came last year during the Black Friday shopping period.

The make-up whizz alleged: “I sold £180,000 worth of products in November 2022.

“I managed to build up a sense of excitement with my audience, teasing them with content from the brands that I'd be working with on Black Friday.

“This excitement translated to a huge uptick in sales, with thousands of people coming to my page to view my LIVEs and engage with the products on offer.

“It was a surreal experience for me and a real career highlight.”

Cariad said her TikTok success has “transformed her life” in many ways, especially with the financial benefits.

Not only has it helped her achieve her “dream career in make-up and beauty”, but she’s made some big purchases too.

She said: “Through TikTok Shop I've earned a life changing amount of money, more than I ever anticipated.

“I've been able to buy my own home, buy a new car and live life a little more comfortably.

“I've recently launched my own makeup business, which is a huge moment for me and my career.

“Some of my family now help me to run the business, which shows the impact that TikTok has had not just on me, but also my family.

“I've achieved so much more in the last year than I thought was possible, and I have so many goals for the next few years.”

Cariad advised that people who want to start out on TikTok should begin by posting regularly.

She explained: “Consistency with your video uploads is key as it enables audiences to regularly engage with your content.

“Secondly, be authentic and creative with your content – this is what TikTok is all about, being your true self on the platform and you will find the right audience for you.”

“Fortunately, TikTok gave me that big break.”
