I’m a celeb fashion stylist – your fall wardrobe ages you, ditch skinny jeans & puffer jackets to look 10 years younger | The Sun

A CELEBRITY stylist has revealed how just 10 items can make you look years younger.

Many of us are guilty of sacrificing style for comfort as the days get colder, but our frumpy fall fashion choices could make us look decades older.

Miranda Holder (@themirandaholder) has garnered over 180,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares fashion and beauty hacks.

Trends that were once popular in the aughts can look dated when worn now, such as skinny jeans and matching jewelry.

She shared her fall fashion recommendations with The U.S. Sun as she listed staples that can turn the clock back when styled correctly.

So, how many of these clothing items do you already have in your closet?

Oversized Blazer

The fashion expert explained why it’s time to revamp your wardrobe if it’s full of clothes that were bought with a focus on accentuating your figure.

Miranda said: “Looser, oversized tailoring is really having a moment, in case you hadn’t noticed.

“There is nothing that will date your look faster than wearing tight-fitting tailoring, even if it does work wonders for your waistline.

“Instead invest in more fluid, unstructured jackets with drapey trousers to match.

"Add a skinny belt, ruche up the sleeves to show off an arm party, and try a dopamine-enhancing bright color to stand out from the crowd.

“Get the color right for your skin tone and it can knock 10 years off you in an instant, so invest a little time and money on understanding what suits you.”

Wide leg jeans

Celebrities including Paris Hilton and Britney Spears led the skinny jeans trend throughout the 2000s but the denim style is no longer deemed fashionable.

Miranda said: “The skinny will always have a place in our closets and our hearts, as apart from anything else, they look great with a slouchy knit and tuck beautifully into boots, but for a fresher, younger look, try a wide leg jean.

“Darker denim and higher waists work particularly well for this style, you can channel some French girl chic by adding a Breton top and a jaunty neck scarf.

“Finish the look with the welcome return of this season's ballet flats and a stylish satchel handbag and you will give Emily a serious run for her money on her next trip to Paris.”

Shoulder padded T-shirt

Miranda said: “In this era of understated style, being overdressed can be a real fashion faux pas.

“It’s far safer – and dare I say cooler – to hang out with the cool girls and err on the casual side.

"T-shirts are a great way to add some casual nonchalance to an otherwise smarter look, but the secret, particularly as we get older, lies in adding some shoulder pads.

“These can either be purchased separately and tucked under your bra strap, or you can search for tees that already have them incorporated.

“Either way, the pads provide some flattering structure to our upper bodies, broadening our shoulders and balancing our boobs.

“What’s more, the tee provides the perfect canvas to express your inner fashionista with a statement necklace or two – even the classic (but sometimes frumpy-looking) pearl necklace looks great when set against a more contemporary background such as this.”

Waistcoat

Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid are among the celebrities who’ve embraced wearing waistcoats after taking inspiration from the 1990s.

Miranda said: “Waistcoats are everywhere this fall, and besides being an on-trend piece, they are also a very useful addition to your wardrobe.

“They are surprisingly versatile and can act as a ‘topper’ over almost everything from shirts to your shoulder-padded T-shirts to a boho dress.

“They add interest, can update an otherwise uninteresting outfit, and being a ‘third piece’ (the holy grail amongst stylists in the know, for completing an outfit) makes you look put together.”

Sequin top

Those of us who avoid wearing eye-catching sparkly outfits could be missing an opportunity to look youthful.

Miranda said: “Sequins are not just for Christmas, nor the evening for that matter.

“As we get older, and our skin needs a little bit of extra help, the humble, light-reflecting sequin can work wonders in adding radiance and brightening otherwise dull complexions.

“Other shinier fabrics such as silk and satin work in a similar way, but the sequin is the jewel in your sartorial crown, and should be your secret wardrobe weapon when you need to bring out the big fashion guns and be your very best sparkly self – in all senses of the phrase!

“Besides their rejuvenating properties, they also look fantastic when paired with super-casual items – say cargo trousers or distressed jeans.

“This contrast of dressy and casual is known as ‘high-low’ dressing, and is a style trick often used by stylists when working with celebrities as it instantly elevates their look, why not give yourself a bit of celebrity treatment and follow suit?”

Satin slip skirt

It’s time to take a break from the denim skirts stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell championed all summer.

Miranda said: “Not just for twenty-somethings, the satin slip skirt is a great addition to the more mature closet.

“The feminine, dressier fabric and soft silhouette looks fabulous when teamed with contrasting textures, such as a chunky knit, a dressed-down sweatshirt, or of course your new shoulder-padded Tee.

“Play up the contrasts and style it high-low, for a dash of the unexpected.

“Worried it won’t suit your figure?

“Experiment with adjusting the height of the waistline by adding wide belts, wearing the skirt a little lower perhaps, or tucking your sweater into your bra or an elasticated belt for a cropped effect, finally there is always the French half tuck which helps to disguise a tummy.”

Sculptural stud earrings

Jewelry sets with matching earrings, necklaces, and rings have become outdated as trendsetters are opting for a less polished look.

Miranda said: “Do away with the danglies and instead go with bold stud earrings, the more sculptural the better.

“Do not, whatever you do, match your earring to your necklace, as wearing a jewelry ‘set’ is the quickest way to get relegated to the ranks of granny fashion.

“Instead, go for complementary jewelry but not identical.

“It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and similar rules apply when it comes to complementing your shape.

“The slimmer your face the wider you can go with your earring, and the large-busted amongst us would benefit from a V shape statement necklace to set off that shoulder-padded tee.”

Trench

If you’re debating between a puffer coat or a parker jacket, choose neither to be in the style this fall.

Miranda said: “One of the most iconic coats ever, the trench has risen from the ranks of rainwear to a coveted wardrobe staple.

“If you don’t own one yet you are missing out on effortless, easy styling.

“Pop it over evening wear for a touch of supermodel chic, throw it over your gym gear and make like Meghan Markle, or wear it with your wide-leg jeans and tee to further that Parisian aesthetic.

“The most flattering way to wear it is with the belt tied at the back, cinched in to give you the waist you used to have.

“Choose one with an A-line skirt and wide lapels, and you’ve just created a drool-worthy hourglass effect.”

Oversized clutch

Miranda said: “Why not make like a fashion editor and tuck an oversized clutch under your arm?

“The statement clutch bag has been the de rigeur accessory in the frow at fashion week for several years now and for good reason.

“Though not necessarily the most practical of pieces, what we lose in functionality we more than make up for in style points.

“Tuck it under your arm, ‘shoulder-robe’ your coat, add a strong lippy and large sunglasses and you’ll feel as glamorous as Anna Wintour at the Met Ball.”

Slouchy boots

It can be tempting to reach for your trusty Chelsea boots or lace-up hiker styles as the days get wetter.

However, if you want to look youthful you will need to invest in a pair of this fall’s trendiest footwear.

Miranda said: “However high you dare to go, choose a boot with a good slouch to see you through fall with a youthful spring in your step.

“They will look great teamed with slip skirts and will look even better with your wide-leg jeans tucked into them and topped with that oversized blazer.
