I’m a cleaning pro & you’ve been doing your laundry all wrong – I have three tiny changes that’ll save you loads of cash | The Sun

A LAUNDRY whizz has revealed three easy tips that will slash the costs when washing your clothes.

Washing machines are one of the most costly appliances to run at your home, especially since they're used several times a week.

Luckily, to help cash-strapped Britons minimise the expenses on their energy bills, one expert, Rebecca Bebbington, at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, has listed a few tricks that will save money.

Lower temperatures

Chatting with The Express, the pro urged Brits to lower the temperature to around 30C when doing their laundry.

She insisted that washing clothes at a cooler temperature still does the job whilst costing less to run.

According to Ariel, you can save around 57 percent if you choose to wash your garments clothing on 30C as compared to 40C.

The expert added: “Expensive washes can also be a result of the settings on your machine.

''Having your clothes set on a simple 30 minute wash with a spin rate of 1,00 works just as well.''

For items, such as bedding, that require a deeper wash Rebecca advised to try the eco mode setting – this will use less less water and electricity.

If you want to lower the costs even more, the pro recommended cleaning out the filter once a month in order to get rid of any excess dirt and dust.

Soapy water and a sponge can be used to clean this and for the more tight corners, use an old toothbrush, she suggested.

Clean the filter

Karren Barrigan, cleaning guru at Housetastic.co.uk, said that over time, the filter can become a breeding ground for bad bacteria and foul smells.

To tackle this, she advised to empty the filter and allow any trapped dirt and water to escape – lay down a towel if needed.

Grab a cloth and give the cavity a wipe to get rid of any excess water and dirt, and then replace the filter and cover.

The experts recommended to clean these areas at least every couple of months – this practice will both maintain good hygiene and ensure the washing machine works effectively.

Waiting for a full load

As tempting as wanting to keep the basket empty may be, Rebecca advised to wait to do a full load of laundry instead of smaller bits.

If you, however, do need to wash something urgently, hand wash the clothing item instead and put it to dry as soon as possible.

She continued: “One of the easiest ways to save you cash is to stop using the washer dryer for drying unnecessary loads of washing.
