IF YOU'RE going to do one thing to update your home, it's probably going to be adding lick of paint.
It's a cheap and easy way to add personality to a room without breaking the bank, but there's more to it than you might think.
It turns out, it's less about painting a room, but more about what you do beforehand that make make a massive difference.
Shelly Little, property expert at My Move explained what any keen DIYer should do before getting out the paint brush.
She said: "Prepping the room makes a difference.
"It is a known fact that painting is much easier when there is nothing in your way."

This means that the first thing to do is get any large pieces of furniture out of the way so you don't have to squeeze behind them when it comes time to paint.
Move everything into the centre of the room, and remember to cover everything with a sheet so nothing gets damaged.
The pro added: “Although it seems like an unnecessary step to wipe the walls down, it is a very important step.
“Whether you can see it or not, there is buildup on the walls of dirt, dust, and oils from your hands.

“Removing this debris prior to painting will allow the paint to adhere to the walls.”
After that, it's still not time to begin painting, at least if you want it to look like it was done by a professional.
Filling in any small cracks or holes with filler will make a massive difference to the finished look of the wall.
You should also tape off adjacent walls, as well as light switches and plug sockets, and remember to cover the floor.
Then it's time to test your paint, Shelly advised: “Allow the paint to dry, observing its colour in both daytime and night, this will give you a true idea of what the colour will look like on your walls.
“If you are unsure of the colour, purchase a few samples and do the same.”

While priming the walls can also help give your walls a flawless finish, it's still importnat to clean the walls first.
The paint pro said: "It guarantees a great finish and allows you to use less paint."
