I’m a dog trainer and you’re making a massive mistake with your pet’s lead – it could cause YOU a lot of serious damage | The Sun

A DOG trainer has revealed the massive mistake many pet owners make when walking their pooch – and it could cause a lot of serious damage.

So if you’ve got a dog, you’ll need to listen up and pay attention.

A dog trainer from Dog Point USA explained that people often hold their dog’s lead incorrectly, which could lead to big injuries including broken bones.

Sharing his advice on social media, the dog expert simply said: “Don’t do this with your leash.”

He then explained: “If you have a leash with a hand loop, and you put your hand in it and hold it like this [around your wrist], and your dog takes off after a squirrel, any other small animal, or lunges for any other reason, you run the risk of hurting the bones in your hand.

“They can break and you can hurt your shoulder when you get jerked forward."

The dog whizz then revealed how to correctly hold a lead, as he added: “So here’s what you do – where the two ends come together into one and form a triangle, you put that in the palm of your hand, you cross it, and now if you bend your fingers slightly you have a firm grip.

“If you need to let go for any security reason, or safety reasons, you straighten your fingers and your hand can come out and you’re not trapped.

“A lot of people who use their leash like this [incorrect way], annually, get hurt.

“A lot of people get hurt in a lot of different ways – they get dragged over the ground and have scuff marks, they get their fingers hurt, their bones and their palms break, their shoulders get hurt.

“You can simply avoid that by doing this [holding your lead correctly].

“This is super important for people who have dogs that are 100 lbs and above.

“When that dog takes off, there’s very little you can do to hold back that dog, depending on your body weight, size and strength.

“You could be in some deep trouble if you are trapped in your leash.

“So if you have a large weight dog, hold your leash like this [correct way] and you’re always safe.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @dogpointusa, has clearly left many stunned, as it has quickly amassed 26,800 views.

One person said: “Very useful tip.”

Another added: “I learnt that the hard way, my dog took off after a squirrel and I ended up on my face.”

A third commented: “You shouldn't be walking a dog over which you don't have total control or which can physically overpower you……..especially out in public.”
