I’m a hairdresser and you shouldn’t be using combs or round blow dry brushes on your hair for key reason | The Sun

WITH so many different types of brushes and combs out there it can all get a bit confusing.

There are round brushes for just about everything you can think of – but some of them are going to do more harm than good.

Professional hairdresser Chris Wenzel recently revealed which brushes you shouldn't waste your time or money on and why they could be damaging your locks.

He said: "If you're using the wrong combs and brushes they can cause damage and breakage which will set you back on your hair journey, and that's not allowed."

Rat tail comb

This type of comb has a very thin metal handle, which is used for parting the hair, which it's perfect for.

But you definitely shouldn't be using it for anything else, Chris noted.

"You should never be using this to brush through the length of your hair because it's gonna take forever and be miserable," he explained.

Wide tooth comb

This type of comb is "one of the most misused out there," the pro said.

People often use it do detangle their hair before or after washing it, which is a recipe for disaster.

"The teeth on this brush have very little bend in them, so if you go through and hit a knot it's going to snag," he said.

And you can end up ripping the knot out if you're going too fast as well.

Teasing brush

Teasing brushes should be used when you're styling your hair to create added volume, or with some hairspray to help keep flyaways flat.

You shouldn't bother attempting to brush your locks with it though – it's a total waste of time and not what it was designed for.

Round brush

There are a few different types of round brushes, but they're only for when you're actually blow drying your hair, not for detangling or smoothing.

You should also go for a smaller ceramic round brush, rather than a huge one that's harder to use.

And avoid boar bristle round brushes, since they're designed to move oil through your hair, but you should have clean hair before blow drying anyway.

"For almost everyone I'd recommend a brush that's two inches, you can go a little bit bigger or a little bit smaller, but two inches is about what you want," Chris said.
