A HAIR colourist has revealed that the colour of your hair can affect how often you need to wash it… and it’s good news for blondes.
How often to wash your hair is an ongoing debate, with some women mastering the art of once a week, while others get the shampoo lathered every morning.
Colour specialist Danni Solier explained that there’s a lot of variables to be considered when deciding your haircare routine.
These include hormones, diet, stress and which colour your locks are dyed.
Solier said that dyed blonde hair needs less washing as the bleach dries out strands, making sebum a welcome thing.
Sebum is an oily substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands. It coats your skin, including on the scalp, to stop it from drying out.

“Let’s just say you bleach your hair, you will definitely notice a change in the amount you wash your hair,” Solier said.
“And it will likely reduce from how often you had to wash before then.
“With highlights and blonde shades, your hair can feel a little bit drier, and so when your body does produce that sebum the hair is actually being nourished by it, so you won’t need to wash as often.”
But all is not lost for hair dyed without bleach or darker.

“If you’re dying your hair brunette it can still help with an oily scalp,” Solier told Body & Soul.
“But it won’t soak up as much oil as what highlighted or bleached hair will because there’s not that dryness there.”
When deciding how often to wash your hair if it has never been dyed, you should consider how easily it gets greasy.
“If you wash your hair every day, your hair will naturally produce more sebum, so it will just keep producing oiliness,” Solier explained.
“If you want to reduce that, it’s almost like you have to train your hair to be washed once or twice a week.
“And gradually your body won’t produce as much sebum.”
“Brunette hair will usually be noticeably oilier than blonde hair just because of the colour.”
She recommended using a quality dry shampoo to help you stretch out the number of days between washes.
