I’m a parenting expert – 3 things you need to do to keep your baby warm this winter & the right room temperature | The Sun

A PARENTING expert has shared her top tips on keeping your baby warm during the winter months.

The woman works for V&ME, a baby food company founded by Mulu, which aims to provide the best nutrition for growing little ones.

In a short clip on the company’s TikTok channel, the parenting expert said: “I don’t know about you but it’s getting very cold here in the UK…

“So here are three tips to keep your baby happy, warm and snuggly during these cold winter months.”

The first tip she shared was to get the room temperature right in order to prevent your little one from getting too cold.

“Get a thermostat,” she said. “Your baby’s room should be between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius.”

However, the NHS advises the temperature should be between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius in a bid to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

She then shared the importance of layers, explaining that this is especially important in autumn as the weather can be “so hit and miss”.

“Make sure that your baby can adapt to the weather really easily,” she said.

TikTok user @vandmeuk continued: “And tip number three is to keep the wind off your baby, so move the crib away from air vents, drafty windows or outside walls.”

“I hope your baby is nice and warm for winter,” she went on.

In the caption, she added: “It’s getting cold out there!”

People were quick to comment as one person wrote: “In Sweden they leave their babies to sleep in freezing cold outside in their prams”.

While another said: “Same in Russia, -15C and babies nap outside”.

According to Tomme Tippee, the ideal temperature for your baby’s sleep is between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius.

“If the room feels too hot or a little chilly to you, then the chances are your baby will feel the same!” they shared.

The reason it’s so important for the room to be the right temperature is because newborns are initially quite sensitive to cold and warm settings.

They said: “By around 11 weeks, they begin to be able to regulate their body temperature at night-time.

“Even as they grow and develop, it's still really important to ensure that their room is at a safe, comfortable temperature.

“You should also make sure that they're wearing appropriate sleepwear for the temperature of the room.”

According to the NHS, overheating can increase the risk of SIDS.

They state: “Babies do not need hot rooms. All-night heating is rarely necessary. Keep the room at a temperature that's comfortable – about 16 to 20C is ideal.”

They add that if your baby is sweating or their tummy feels hot to the touch, take off some of the bedding and don’t worry if their hands feel cold as this is normal.

“Even in winter, most babies who are unwell or feverish do not need extra clothes,” they wrote.
“Babies should never sleep with a hot water bottle or electric blanket, next to a radiator, heater or fire, or in direct sunshine.”
