I’m a skin expert and here’s why you shouldn’t wash your face with tap water and why you should wear a mask at night | The Sun

MANY people know the importance of removing make-up at night, but did you know that you shouldn’t wash your face with tap water?

Marion Assuied, who is an ex-CEO of a premium French beauty brand, shared her top tips for healthy glowing skin and revealed a waterless cleanser is key.

Speaking to Fabulous, she said: “Your skin is the largest organ in your body and requires constant care and attention, the same way you look after your body by feeding it fruits and vegetables.”

Marion, who has just launched INUR natural skincare range focusing on skincare while you sleep, revealed her top tips…

1. Don’t wash your face with water

Using a waterless cleanser to clean your skin morning and night ensures you're avoiding any nasty impurities carried in polluted waters.

A large number of women opt for a micellar water because they are excellent at removing makeup or cleansing, yet are extremely gentle.

I’m a skin expert, how you sleep can cause wrinkles, so lay in this position

Either use a cotton pad or preferably a reusable face cloth to swipe the cleanser lightly across the face and for added exfoliation, use small circular motions to remove any dead skin cells.

I recommend using a cleanser morning and night to prepare your skin for the next steps of your routine.

Manhattan-based dermatologist Julie Russak, MD spoke of the negative of tap water on your skin to Refinery29, and explained: “Hard water, especially, has a high mineral composition containing heavy metals like iron, copper, zinc, and nickel that can lead to redness and irritation, leaving the skin itchy and inflamed.

“It can also contain chlorine, which is very drying and strips the natural oils and proteins present at the top layer of the skin.

“Once this natural barrier is disrupted, moisture from the inside is lost and skin is exposed to the harmful elements from the outside, leading to redness and blotchiness, and over time to premature ageing and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”

2. A high price doesn’t always mean quality

Some people think that the higher the price point, the higher the quality of the product.

This isnt always the case with beauty and skincare products.
Instead of basing the performance of a product by its price, look at the ingredients in each item.

I found that a large amount of luxury skincare brands feature ingredients that are harsh and include chemicals.

3. Make your skincare work at night

Having a heavier routine at night because your skin works differently in the night to the day and requires different things.

Skin doesn’t react the same way at night and day.

During the day, skin needs extra protection against environmental assaults.

While the body rests, the natural cells’ skin renewal is boosted.

The highest number of cell divisions occurs between midnight and 1am, while the lowest happens between 12pm and 1pm during the day.

There are optimal conditions for the skin to absorb the most considerable amount of active ingredients during the night.

In the morning, benefits are visibly improved, and results are enhanced.

I like the INUR Sleep Mask, which I recommend using this product one to two times a week to ensure you wake up with glowing skin.

It restores, revives and refreshes your skin whilst your body rests and  combines aloe vera, matcha, pre and probiotics, and AHA.

4. It’s not just about your face

Often people forget about carrying their routine beyond their face.

Your neck shares similar delicate skin as your face and is one of the first areas to show ageing, so you should treat your neck with the same love you give to your face.

This means carrying your skincare steps down your neck and décolletage. Use the same products you use on your face and glide the product in an upwards direction to minimise premature ageing.

5. Choose natural skincare over chemicals

I believe that our skin shouldn't be exposed to harsh chemicals which can cause more damage to your skin barrier and instead opt for products that include the most natural and clean products so you know exactly what you are putting in your skin and as a result your body.

I have always tried to eat a nutritional balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables but I never thought about the products I put on top of my skin.

It's not until you remind yourself that our skin is the largest organ of our body and should be treated with the same love that you stop to think about the chemicals you use.
