I’m a teacher – I let my kids doodle and talk about their feelings, parents moan I’m making them ‘soft’ but I don’t care | The Sun

THINK about your favourite teacher from school and it’s probably one who was nice to you and the other students.

Well that’s how high school teacher Suzy Dean wants her students to remember her – she has stuffed animals in her classroom and lets her students doodle once they’ve finished their work.

Posting to her TikTok account, @msdeanlovesyou, Suzy says that despite being a highschool teacher she has a “very, quirky, elementary-style personality,” which seems to prove quite popular with her students – even if parents moan that she’s making the kids soft.

The video, which is captioned “things I do in my classroom that get people pressed,” has received over 1.3 million likes.

Suzy begins by saying: “I have stuffed animals in my classroom that my high school students have the option to have on their desk during the class period.”

Adding: “Do they choose to have them often? Yes.”

She also reveals that she tells her students she loves them every day, and that she lets her quirky personality “show in the classroom.”

Suzy continues, saying that sometimes she has “social emotional learning activities where I encourage my students to write about their feelings.”

“If a student finishes their work early I give them an opportunity to doodle in class if they want to,” Suzy further explains.

With her energetic and active personality, Suzy says she’ll often dance, hop, skip and jump around the room, adding that this makes her students giggle.

Despite teaching teenagers, Suzy still brings stickers into the classroom, adding that she’ll give some to any student who seems to be feeling down in her lessons.

While some may disagree with Suzy’s teaching tactics she says that all of these have worked successfully in her experience of five years of teaching.

Commenters on TikTok seem to love Suzy’s way of teaching, with one person writing: “How is any of this controversial or upsetting? I Would've loved a teacher like you in high school…”

Replying to this comment Suzy said that she has received some negative feedback: “You would be surprised! On this app I have kids telling me they would walk out and parents telling me I’m making their kids ‘soft’”

“We need more teachers like this honestly,” wrote another viewer.
