If you plan carefully, you can increase the value of your home in a big way with small investments – for as little as $40.

The home pros at Apartment Therapy collected the best home renovations under $1,000 worth doing, inspired by a Reddit thread.

Here are the projects you can add to your to-do list, depending on your budget.

IF YOU HAVE $50

With a small budget of only $50, you can still improve your home in meaningful ways.

Head to the kitchen, where you'll be opening up the cabinets and making a major investment with a little cash.

Installing shelves in your kitchen cabinets is a great way to expand your storage, without the heavy-duty construction that comes with a whole set of new cabinets.

Measure your cabinets, then buy shelves that will fit right in. You can buy the shelves at a wholesale price, the experts write, but if you're willing to do extra research, you can find them even more cheaply at a surplus store.

Some discount stores, like Home Goods, also have freestanding wire shelves that can fit snugly into your cabinets and create levels for organization.

It can also make navigating the kitchen easier on your body: adding shelves to lower cabinets expands your space, but also makes them easier to navigate without crouching and bending.

For a full-house revamp, spend your $50 on motion sensor lights. On Amazon, you can find rechargeable lights that adhere to the walls and cabinets, or unobtrusive LEDs that plug right into your outlets.

Position them near your front door, under cabinets, or in any areas that could do with a little extra visibility.

IF YOU HAVE $150

With $150 to spend, you can transform your kitchen and bathroom into luxury amenities.

"Slamming drawers and cabinets shut may be a thing of the past once you install soft-close doors, which many people said made them feel as if they were experiencing the high life," the experts wrote.

While you're elevating your bathroom cabinet, spend $35 on a soft-close toilet seat, too.

It's an unexpected addition, but once you have one, you'll never want to go without it.

IF YOU HAVE $300

There are two projects in the $300 range that will improve your life in major ways.

The first is a new kitchen faucet, which you can install yourself or pay for a professional to tackle. Take a look at your sink and determine which features would make your life easier.

Could you benefit from a pull-down faucet head, which will let you get deep into the nooks and crannies of your dirty dishes?

Or do you want a new spout with a high, curved neck, which will arc over the sink basin and leave more room for big stock pots? The choice is yours.

If your kitchen suits you just fine already, consider investing that $300 in your garage.

Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, Costco, and other home improvement stores have heavy-duty shelves in the $150 – $200 range that are perfect for the garage.

Spend the rest of your budget on brackets and security. Wall-mounted shelves, secured with extra bolts or ceiling joists, can make you feel safer.
