I'm an interior designer – 3 mistakes which make your home look like trash and a Home Goods buy that's disgusting | The Sun

A LUXURY interior designer has shared his take on three mistakes that are making your home look less than ideal.

Taking to social media, he listed off the decorating faux pas you may be making.

"Here are three ways for your house to not look like a piece of sh*t," interior designer Bilal Rehman (@bilalrehmanstudio) began in his TikTok video.

"I promise you none of us are living laughing or loving those disgusting Home Goods signs that you're hanging around your house.

"We do not need to know that that part of the home is the kitchen.

"We do not need to know where the laundry room is.

"I don't need a sign on top of the toilet that says this is where you take a sh*t."

He suggested an alternative to mundane signs.

"Instead, maybe put some real art on the walls," he said.

"Nobody needs directions around your house. If your house is that big then I promise you you're not shopping at Home Goods."

The sassy designer moved on to his next gripe: curtain choice.

"Curtains are vital to any space, and if you don't do them correctly they can hinder the design entirely.

"They can shorten your room, they can cheapen your space, and they can make everything look out of scale and out of place," he said.

"When doing curtains my rule is take them as high as you can go.

"Which preferably is all the way to the ceiling, and drop them down until they're about one inch from the floor.

"That gives you the tallest, sexiest silhouette."

The expert gave some more helpful advice on decorating, particularly for DIY lovers.

"I'm not a DIY person, but a lot of you are, so let's talk about it.

"That marble contact paper that you think is giving you that real stone look, it's not.

"That cabinet with that wooden top that's being covered in a giant sticker, it looks horrendous.

"The second water gets on it it starts peeling.

"Instead go to a home salvage shop or a slab yard that has some scraps, and for a very inexpensive price you'll get the real deal stone look, and it will actually add value to the piece that you just spent hours working on."
