I’m an interior designer – people always make the same decor mistakes… bigger isn’t always better | The Sun

A PRO interior designer has revealed the three common mistakes he sees people make in their homes… and how to fix them.

Nick Lewis is known for disliking bar doors, hating double island kitchens and “too much open shelving”.

With years of experience and thousands of followers hanging on his every word, Nick has shared some of the top mistakes he sees people make when designing their homes.

Dressed in a black shirt, he shared: “Let’s go over the top interior design mistakes that I see and how to fix them.”

He then launched into his first point, explaining that not having a clue what your own style is can lead to disastrous decisions.

“This can result in your buying a lot of unnecessary furniture and wasting a lot of money,” Nick shared.

The interior designer then suggested people look at different design styles that “really inspire you” and go from there.

He said that in time this will allow you to develop your own sense of style, where you may even combine two different ones that resonated with you, from Modern Industrial to Scandinavian.

The second issue he’s seen is when people choose the wrong paint for the room.

Nick said: “When you’re choosing paint, make sure that it’s the last thing you choose.

“You want to make sure you have all your furniture and fixed elements first and your palette figured out before you apply your first coat of paint.”

He went on to share that a safe method would be to try different swatches of paint on the walls first, taking into account what it would look like in different areas of the room and different times of the day.

And third, he said, was buying the wrong furniture for the space that you have.

Nick explained in his YouTube short: “This can go both ways, buying furniture too small for your space or, more commonly, buying furniture that is too big for your space.

“If you’re considering new furniture, put tape on the floor in the size of the measurements of the furniture that you’re looking at to make sure you have enough room to move around comfortably.”

People were quick to comment on his post as one person wrote: “Thanks for always being kind and never belittling us design-challenged folks! :-)”

Another shared: “Great tip on the paint! I wouldn’t think to get all of my furniture first. Since painting is such a low effort/high visual reward, it’s always something I wanna do first!”

A third posted: “Haven't heard of taping the floor for your desired outline of furniture size before. Thanks!!”

While a fourth added: “My problem is that i really like a lot of different design styles. Im drawn to Japandi, scandi, and a bit of cottage, but also maximalism send help!” followed by a crying with laughter emoji.
