IF you’re making cosmetic changes to your home, you’re bound to make some mistakes here and there.
One interior designer named Julie Sousa said people often go wrong when choosing a paint color – but there’s a way to do it right.
Posting to her TikTok (@the_avantgarde), the DIY and interior design pro revealed why paint can be so fickle.
“Here’s one of the most common mistakes people make when selecting paint colors,” she began.
Julia used a brush to sample what looked like beige paint onto a piece of white wood.
“Alright, see what I’m swatching? Here’s how it looks in rooms facing different directions.”
Four seemingly very different colors appeared on the screen at once.
“This is all the exact same color,” she claimed.
The top paint swatch, which looked off-white, was from a room in the Northern hemisphere that had Northern facing windows.
She explained that “colors appear cooler” in those conditions.

The bottom swatch, on the other hand, looked a bit darker.
Why the change? “Colors appear warmer in Southern facing windows.”
And in the middle, the swatch looked yellow on one side and blue on the other.
“Colors appear both warm and cool in Eastern and Western facing windows, depending on where the sun is during the day."
So what's her advice? “Never trust one swatch for all of your rooms.”
Viewers were shocked by the huge variations.
“My new fear,” one person wrote.
“Anyone else have trust issues as a result of paint? I have been personally victimized by multiple colors due to this very issue,” another joked.
And a third was reminded of a past debate: “The dress was gold and white.”
