Kate ‘yanked up’ her £40 see-through dress that ‘caught William’s eye’ – claims

The Crown, which is set to air this autumn, will cover the era when young Kate Middleton met Prince William at St Andrews University, played by actors Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy.

The future Princess of Wales made headlines when she donned a provocative dress in 2002 while they were students together in Scotland.

At the Edinburgh TV Festival earlier this week, The Crown’s creators displayed pictures of the reenacted scene while discussing the sixth and final season.

Kate caught William’s eye when she donned a see-through dress during a charity fashion show at university, after which they began dating.

But Kate’s famous sheer dress was actually supposed to be a skirt, according to an auctioneer.

Fashion expert and auctioneer Kerry Taylor told US Weekly that the Princess of Wales showed “great enterprise” when she decided to rework the piece for the charity fashion show back in 2002.

Ms Taylor said: “It was meant to be a skirt actually and she kind of yanked it up and wore it as a dress.

“She had a great figure, so yeah, she definitely caught Prince William’s eye that night of the rest is history.”

Charlotte Todd, the fashion designer behind Kate’s outfit, created the garment as part of her academic project titled “The Art of Seduction”.

Ms Todd told People magazine: “I didn’t know who Kate Middleton was and I didn’t put her in it. It was just pure chance!

“Everyone says that the fashion show was when the romance started, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history.”

Although the dress was said to have cost roughly £40 to make, it was eventually auctioned off in 2011 for a whopping £78,000.

Additionally, a royal expert asserted that William fell for Kate as a result of her wearing the see-through garment on the university catwalk.

The Prince of Wales was reported to have spent £200 for a front-row ticket to see his future wife wearing the revealing dress.

Kate and William dated for eight years until the Prince proposed to the Princess while on holiday in Kenya.

As their relationship grew, Kate acknowledged she was “very shy” initially and would blush when she first met the Prince.

At St Salvator’s Hall in St Andrews, the couple lived a few doors down from each other. They started playing tennis and getting to know each other while they were students.
