Why this year’s theme is controversial
Karl Lagerfeld was unquestionably one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, given his tenure at both Chanel and Fendi, as well as his own namesake label. But while his shadow looms large over fashion, Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, leaves a legacy that’s been overshadowed at times by offensive comments he made against refugees, overweight women and LGBTQIA+ people.
The announcement of Lagerfeld as this year’s Met Gala honoree was received with criticism by some, including online activists and actor Jameela Jamil.
But several fashion identities have formed the view that while Lagerfeld’s comments were indeed offensive and should not be excused, it would be a disservice to fashion to “cancel” him and his body of work entirely.
“You have to separate the work from the person. He represents that jet set era of Dior, Valentino and Saint Laurent that we won’t see again,” former Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements says.

What is the Met Gala, anyway?
The Met Gala is the nickname given to the annual charity ball for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute. Over time, it has become as much a fashion show as a fundraiser. It’s also become synonymous with Vogue magazine, and its formidable editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.
While many of the details surrounding the night are kept under wraps until only moments before the first guest arrives, there have been a few leaks in the past few days, including the likely attendance of one Kimberley Kardashian.

Welcome to the 2023 Met Gala
It’s the first Monday in May (at least in New York City), and that means it’s time for the Anna Wintour show, also known as the Met Gala.
Every year, the gala has a theme, and in 2023, the event will celebrate the life and (sometimes controversial) times of designer the late Karl Lagerfeld.
Taking you through the red carpet will be fashion editor Melissa Singer and style editor Damien Woolnough as we dissect the best celebrity looks – and any surprise guests.
Will Meghan and Harry make a surprise appearance and upstage the coronation lead-up? Will Kylie Jenner arrive with her rumoured new beau Timothee Chalamet? And will Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, get out of quarantine in time for the red carpet? All the answers will be revealed over the next couple of hours, so pour yourself a coffee, and settle in.
