My daughter changed her name when she was FIVE and randomly started calling herself something different | The Sun

A MUM has revealed how her five-year-old daughter decided to change her name to something entirely different.

The woman took to Quora to share how her little girl decided to go from being called Anna Christine to Claire Paige – and asked other parents if they’d be offended.

She wrote: “She wrote Claire on all of her papers at school and all of her toys at home.

“She simply told us her new name and expressed that Claire was the name she wanted everyone to call her.

“I was freaking out on the inside wondering what psychological defect was behind this strange request, but we all just started using her new name.

“I asked her teacher if this was unusual and asked if I needed to get her counselling.

“The teacher insisted that the name change was indicative of a strong sense of self and not to worry about it.”

The mum said that she asked her daughter a few months later if it would be possible to call her Anna again – and the little girl agreed.

The woman explained: “I expressed that Anna was the name that we had chosen for her since she was a baby.

“She just said ok and ran away to play. It has been Anna ever since.

“I want to add, if she had said she wanted to keep the Claire Paige name, I would have honoured that.

“I would have waited until she was older to legally change it, but I would have helped her.

“My daughter is an adult now. I occasionally run across something in the house like a clipboard or a soccer ball that has the name Claire written on it. It makes me smile.”

The mum said she accepted that a name is very “personal” and it “stands for an identity” and she would “trust the individual to know best.”

One said: “I really appreciate you stepping aside (inside of yourself) to allow her to experience something that she chose.
