My name is mispronounced all the time – I'm absolutely fed up with it, I've even been forced to use a different name | The Sun

CHOOSING a name for your child is a big decision for any parent to make.

After all, not only do you want to love the name, but you want your little one to love it too.

While some parents may choose a traditional name for their child, others may go down a more unique route.

But one woman has revealed she is fed up with people mispronouncing her name all the time.

The woman took to Reddit to reveal that she is “tired of people mispronouncing my name” and even uses a different name to avoid the aggravation.

The 19-year-old goes by the username ‘u/tossaway1120’ and explained: “So my name is Marquesa (Mar-kay-sah).

I want to use my guilty pleasure baby name but people think I’m crazy

“My whole 19 years of living everyone has mispronounced it Mar-kee-sah , which really annoys me, since that pronunciation sounds like the masculine name of Marquis.

“Only other Hispanic people and the occasional European get it right, but I live in East Coast North America.

“Due to this, I’ve been forced to call myself “Mara” pronounced like Car with an A at the end.

“I like that name, however I love the sound of my actual name when it’s pronounced correctly. It sounds like music to my ears.

“I was so embarrassed when the lady said it wrong, and I tried to correct her, and she just stared blankly at me and went “right this way you two”.

“Anyways, thank you to whoever read this…”

Reddit users sympathised with the woman, but also highlighted that people shouldn’t be blamed for not knowing how to pronounce a name correctly.

One person said: “Ok, if you are talking about people not pronouncing it right after being corrected I agree that would be annoying!

“I don’t think people can be blamed for not knowing at first though.”

Another added: “I understand your frustration. If it’s people you see often/daily, they should know how they say your name correctly, or else that’s rude.

“You might have to keep correcting them until they get it. I think that if it’s one person you won’t likely see again, you should let it go though.”

A third commented: “I hear you! I also go by a nickname, partially due to many people not pronouncing my full name correctly.

“Yes, some people pronounce it right after being corrected, but there are also plenty of people who just don't respond to correction, for whatever reason.”

Someone else stated: “People are literally just lazy. I’ve noticed that it happens even to “easy” names too, of course it doesn’t happen nearly as often as it does to people with “different” names.

“It’s rude and frustrating. And correcting people doesn’t always work!”
