Only the top 1% of people can spot all the triangles in trippy optical illusion – how many do you see? | The Sun

WHEN you first glance at this optical illusion, you may not realize it contains multiple triangles.

In fact, the image is made up of several triangles, way more than you might think at first glance, and only a fragment of the population can spot them all.

A TikTok personality, Hectic Nick, shared the illusion and it quickly went viral, racking up 1.6million views and over 135k comments.

Clad in sunglasses, the mysterious content creator showed the confounding triangle image and told viewers to concentrate.

"Only one percent of people can get this right," Nick said. "How many triangles are in this image?"

He let viewers have a few moments to study the image.

"It sounds simple, but it's not easy," he teased. The large, primary triangle was immediately apparent, as were some smaller triangles toward the top, but the rest of the image is filled with other shapes.

"Let me know how many you think there are," Nick implored viewers.

TikTok users took to the comments section, eager to share their guesses.

"Look at the top shapes," one viewer tried to explain. "It’s a triangle and it’s three."

Another argued the tally was only one. "The others are squares or incomplete triangles," the commenter claimed.

The most popular guess was four, while many viewers also said they counted seven or 15 triangles in the illusion.

One viewer said they saw three triangles, then commented again and amended their guess to four.

"Guys, it's one," an exasperated viewer wrote. "It's just cut up."

All of these guesses were actually lower than the number of triangles the image contains.

Other viewers went over the threshold, guessing 24, 42, or even upwards of 100 triangles.

To find the actual answer, remember that you can compose triangles out of the smaller shapes.

They don't all need to be equilateral triangles, either. Some will have narrow bases and longer sides.

Are you ready for the final count?

The number of triangles contained in the image is eighteen.

If you struggle to count them all, treat the lines in the image as a grid, and construct triangles of varying sizes row by row and column by column.

And if you got the answer right away, congratulations – you've earned bragging rights when you share the illusion with friends!
